>Alt-Tawna: I killed the franchise?! Really?!

It wasn't a good game. Imagine a Crash Bandicoot game where the jumping sucks (all three of them are ass), the camera position is pulled too far back most of the time causing eye strain, the artstyle bleeds together, the box placement in levels is straight up terrible, and occasionally, the game is interrupted by unskippable cutscenes that ruin the flow. All of these problems and

Jackass reviews giving the game high review scores cause they don't want to piss off Activision.

Don't bother with this game unless you're really curious. It killed the Crash Bandicoot franchise for a reason or two or many. And no, that silly mod someone made for the game doesn't fix how awful the platforming in this platforming game is.

Very solid skeleton brought down by an overwhelming amount of minor flaws. The levels are great except that they're all obnoxiously long, and even that would be forgivable if you weren't expected to play through them all twice because of the arrange mode (or 4 times, in the case of the levels that also have an alternate character version). That's not even counting the time trial runs. Crate placements are mostly fine, with one or two exceptionally hidden ones per level (with one big example being a junkyard level where hitting the obvious checkpoint without noticing the crate fully hidden in an about-to-be-covered barrel means your run through the level is fucked). NuTawna is so immediately abrasive that some people quit playing before the reveal that she's the punchline.
7/10, maybe higher if you don't want to go for full completion.

Anonymous No.717111629
It is to a point, and then it keeps going and going and going and before you know it it's so buried in shit that you almost forget the good parts. Playing the main stages casually is fine and throwback tape stages is basically a small game's worth of N. Brio stages which is fantastic. Playing for completion is such a goddamn mess though that even box clears are ruined - 98% of the time it's fine, but that remaining 2% will make you want to snap the fucking disc in half. And forget nonsense like N. Sanely Perfect relics or time trial platinum relics for 106%. Damn near unbearable grind unless this sort of thing is real life escapism, then at least it'll keep your mind off things I guess.

Does this game bring anything new to the table or am I better off replaying the trilogy? I'm old, I really enjoyed Crash 1 / 2 / 3 but haven't touched this one yet.

I appreciate Crash 1 for the difficulty, that's why I don't like the remake, they made it so that you can infinitely re-try the bonus levels. In the original you only got one shot at the bonus stage, and then you had to do the whole level again.
Anonymous No.717112475
>>717112224
The original games play better. Trilogy doesn't add anything meaningful. Just prettier graphics and worse controls. Add in that emulating the old games gives you save states and its no contest.

Not him but it kinda mixes ideas of all of them together. Platforming is somewhere between Crash 1 and Crash 2 and the masks kind of sequence out Crash 3-esque power ups every once in a while. If you enjoyed those games for completionism though, don't bother. You can clear all 3 of those games twice, maybe thrice over before you'll finish 4 once. It has SO much needless extra bullshit to do, it's actually obscene how repetitive it all gets.

>>717112224
N. Sane fucks up the jump mechanics and collision detection but it's workable. I would say for 2 and 3, the platforming is loose enough to where it doesn't really matter which one you do. 1 is the real deciding factor as N. Sane's decision to give everything rounded collision detection makes the precision platforming significantly harder, but also it brings the game up to the other games' QOL standards so you get shit like an actual box counter, an actual save system and way less need to do shit in a single run. I actually prefer N. Sane to the original for the QOL reasons but in terms of raw gameplay, the original is better.

>Rescues Crash and Coco
The first of which was in Nsanely forced scene. I mean really nigga? You can beat Crash and Coco by tying them up with rope? The Tasmanian Devil knockoff and the token girl genius? Why hasn't Cortex done this yet?

I don't think they were trying to be funny here (cause a cage with bars wide enough for them to slide out of would have been funny). I think the writer just sucked. Tawna wasn't meant to be a jobber, the writing is just that bad and incontinent.
Anonymous No.717115326
Gem fatigue out the ass. Somehow the most gems of any crash game, and less colored gems than ever, so variety is all gone. Counting N verted and Tawna/Dingo levels that repeat other levels anyway, some levels effectively have like 20 fucking gems. Hidden boxes out the ass because the devs saw a few in the trilogy, thought "that was cool" and made it so every level requires autistic combing now. I don't time trial, but they couldn't have made the "dash" mechanic any more faggy with that triple spin nonsense. To sum it up, it felt like they took certain aspects the franchise was known for, cranked them all up to 11 with no regard for sense at all, and made an abomination that does play well.

Crash was never good, its an extremely guided game with no room for player expression, even mario or megaman feel more free form
Unless you like those kind of games I guess, I hate rhythm games for the same reason.
Anonymous No.717116665
>>717116278
In Crash 4's case it can barely be called content. It's maybe 10 hours of actual meat if you treat the throwback tapes like the crystals of 2 & 3, but then there's 60 hours of cynical padding thrown on top of that. Did you beat the level? Cool, now replay half of it but with more nitro crates, then get every gem, then do that all over again in a single run, then do it with an underwater filter or some shit, then time trial it like your a fucking autist, and then do that for almost every fucking level in the game.

That's more true of 1 than it is of 2 and 3. You sound like you just don't like precision platforming, which basically is a rhythm game in the guise of a platformer.

All platformers are precision platformers once you start optimizing, my issue is that games like crash dont let me think they show me what they want me to do and its the only thing I can do, I cant optimize anything by myself, I cant figure out anything by myself, you do the one jump yuou can do then you do the next

Yeah, that's how 1 and its very rudimentary moveset works within the level designs. 2 gives you tools like the high jump and slide jump and loosens the level design up a bit. 3 goes even further with power-ups and time trials.

Could only handle Crash 4 in short bursts because inevitably some of the platforming would be pure aids. Unstoppable camera movement fucking up jumps was my kryptonite and it pissed me off to no end.

That's the intended style of it. It's about navigating perilous narrow corridors rather than free roaming in a 3D open world. You hate the very aspect of the series that made it so distinct and memorable.

Could have been great, unfortunately the devs seemed to entirely misunderstand what made the original games fun. They copied the formula but decided to turn it into an obnoxious grindfest. I guess the bosses were an improvement but that's not really a tall order coming from the OG trilogy.

It’s wild how they tried to reinvent the wheel during the PS2 era and it just came out as a warped octagon. Crunch? Elemental masks? Mutant jack mechanics? All discarded in the bin of "what the hell were we thinking." Say what you want about sticking to double jumps and spins, at least it's focused. Not everything needs a gimmick, sometimes you just want tight platforming and satisfying gem hunts without strapping a frickin’ monkey to your back.

This, I gave up pretty early on through vanilla, but restarting the game with N-hanced genuinely did make it feel more like a traditional crash game. I got many gems on my first try, whereas in vanilla, I started to just say fuck it and speedrun through the levels because it was always so easy to miss several crates. If anyone else itt gave up on the game, I recommend giving it another chance with the mod

A friend screenshared it and we looked at the hidden stuff together, doing that was kind of fun. But the game goes on for way too long, the inverted levels felt like padding but at least they changed where the hidden gems were.
