I'm playing it for the first time and I think it's so good. It takes me back to Super Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie on the N64. It reminds me of Sonic Adventure at times. Probably the most reminiscent of Donkey Kong 64 however. What do you think of it?
was alright. too much collecting stuff
It's a top three 3D Mario, up there with 64 and Galaxy 1. Not really sure why /v/ hates it, but this is the same board that acts like Sunshine isn't one of the worst 3D Marios, so I suppose it makes sense.
>>717111310there's so many collectibles!
>>71711138764 and Galaxy are rock solid picks! and holy shit, yes Sunshine is awful
Too many moons and no 1-ups made it a bit bland for me.
The formula of Super Mario 64 and Sunshine isn't completely the same as this game, when there was nothing wrong with it. You'd have a map of a decent size and each Star changes the layout in a particular way to generate a kind of level-design that leads to the star, and each location only had a handful in total.
By having moons planted 10 feet apart for really simple actions like "Ooh, the ground shines, ITS A POWER MOON" the whole Bing Bing Wahoo factor is diminished by feeling more like an Ubibox type of game.
It ended up feeling like the Korok Seeds where there's so many it doesn't feel like I'm supposed to actually get all of them, but I enjoyed beating past 3D Marios and then starting the endgame collectathon, finding some of the best level designs snuck into the additional stars of each map.
That holds it back for me in the end.
>>717112825Coins double as one ups and currency, that seems an improvement. Previous games set your live count to 3 after collecting them, now THAT was gay. You're acting like Mario 64 and Sunshine were exactly what the game needed to be like, that's bizarre. I prefer the collectibles being in the one level and exploring and not being kicked back out of them honestly. I have found that the things you do for a moon naturally become more difficult as I play. Especially in the instanced challenge stages, where there's a pretty basic moon for using the new mechanic, and a harder moon for mastering the mechanic. I appreciate the variety, whereas Sunshine was just this one shitty gimmick, Odyssey isn't afraid to experiment and discard them so they dont overstay the welcome. It didn't feel like korok seeds IMHO, those had a different purpose than collecting them to get to a new level.
my favorite 3D mario. I'm replaying it with the switch 2 update and it's been a blast.
It was the first game since Mario 64 that gave me the feeling of playing Mario 64 for the first time. I can't decide if I like it more than 64 or not. I've replayed it 4 times with new self imposed challenges, it has just the right amount of freedom of movement vs structure to allow you to make your own fun
>>717112825That's exactly why I like it better than 64. The moons allow you to draw your own path through the level as long as you have the minimum number by the end. Every time I play I get the moons in a different order and it feels fresh
Great movement that's its biggest draw and its biggest issue at the same time.
On one hand, those who enjoy expressing their skills will find a great playground for little skips, skill expression aplenty.
On the other, it is inarguably the most broken Mario's ever been from a movement standpoint, with Cappy Dive being essentially a double jump, and a really good one at that. Not once in the game does the level design even try to accomodate for the sheer brokenness of Mario, and admitedly, that's for the better, because it would be very restrictive and unfun. MAYBE the game could have used a bit more capless challenges, I still remember the bullet & banzai bill capless moons as a highlight of the game.
I'm part of the first category, which usually isn't the case as "Make your own fun" type of games rarely over substantial gameplay, rather it focuses on customisation, or the world, or other stuff I tend to find superfluous. Odyssey isn't that.
My only gripes are that the OST is somewhat unremarkable. My favorite tracks are Bowser's Castle 1 and Another World. Can't say I care for most everything else.
>>717113712excellent perspective, the game even allows you to go to branching levels at different points too
>>717114342I always felt Mario 64 movement was broken, so Odyssey doesn't feel much more different
