There's a lot of ways to reward the player.
If the game is just the same shit over and over, provides no challenge, has no progression of any kind, has a terrible or non-existent story, and doesn't even look that good, what's the point?
You don't have to excel in everything but there has to be SOMETHING.

Overcoming a challenge is a valid form of reward.
But with slop like Breath of the Wild for example there's no challenge (because everything is imbalanced), the story sucks, the progression is flat, etc.
