There is only so much culture you can make from such nothing characters as princesses. Women are inherently more limited in the comedic value they bring because of it either triggering women, or turning into a fetish. You can't have a female Wario, at most you get Captain Syrup. The only thing that remained there is the greediness. No wacky faces, no laziness, no gross out humor. Just a female pirate. She's alright, but she's not carrying a game on her own. The same applies to all princesses, who also happen to have nothing to go off of.
Mario's the main character, that alone carries a buttload of potential. He is quite frankly just as much of a plank of wood as princesses but has had so many appearances & rivalries it's easy enough to bypass.
Luigi has flaws, which make him endearing and the normalfag favorite. Also has a dedicated rival in King Boo, and a clear win/loss dynamic.
Wah brothers have had the most endearing moments in Mario spinoffs (and since this is a Mario spinoff so people are familiar with other spinoffs to an extent). Wario specifically also has 2 franchises & jew jokes.
DK has been in the epicenter of meme culture through various sources, from the DK rap to the cartoon and so much more.
Yoshi's had a combo of humiliation rituals coming his way, from the babyfication of his series, to weird fetishists, to never shaking off that gay friend allegation from the iconic MK64 image.

They're not comic relief, they don't have material to go off of, Peach has 2 mediocre games to her name and that's it, Daisy has been reduced to a Double Dash quote for longer than not and has barely started breaking out of it.
