How do I into DoTA 2? I have no idea where I'm supposed to be at certain times or what I'm supposed to build and there isn't any comprehensive way to learn. Do I just spam games until I figure it out?

Doesn't the game teach you how to play? Why can't you do this stuff? I didn't do it because I played Warcraft 3.

this is one of those games that takes maybe 100 hours just to find your bearings. MOBAs in general are a knowledge check, but DotA is particularly bad in this regard
if at all possible, i suggest playing with a group of friends that won't mind playing with a new player

No, you have to study the game. Tournament replays, streams, the occasional good youtube video.

Like, do you think I had this shit back in the day? No, and I just learned while playing. Dota is too complex to even be explained, and you should just do those tutorials and learn what you can.
What do we know about the game?
>three lanes
Top, mid, bot. It's 2-1-2, so mid is alone.
>5v5
That means each team has five roles, and you will be playing one of the roles. It doesn't matter to new players, but the heroes are actually best in certain roles. For a new player, you just pick someone you like the look of and then learn how their spells work. The game even recommends items, so Dota is easier to learn than ever.
To buy items, you need gold, which you get from
>killing other people
>killing lane creeps
>killing neutrals
and that's the quick rundown on Dota.

Also, the game ends when you kill the enemy throne, or the enemy team does the same to yours. To get to their throne, you push a lane. That means fighting with your lane creeps until you kill the towers and enter the enemy base. There's a lot to learn, and that's why you should just play instead of reading.

new players struggle a lot with time windows.
They win the mid game with Spirit Breaker for example, and they only get kills, kills, kills, kills while the enemy Naga Siren grows, and 50 minutes in they get fucked by a big push, and they don't understand what they did wrong.

They essentially don't know when to go high ground, when to split-farm, when to organize a smoke gank, when to gather up and push a tower, when to do roshan, and so on.
They can't tell "what is supposed to be happening" now.

Let's look at this nice short. Can you tell Mag ultied? Can you tell he BKBed from the fact that he turned yellow? If the answer is yes, you can watch matches, but if not, you're way too new to learn from this stuff.
I'm so well versed I can tell it's Malik and Satanic at the end; They were playing for Team Spirit.

just straight up playing the game gets you familiar with hero abilities and items. that goes a long way in this game
aside from that, like the other anon suggested, you can watch educational youtube videos about DotA if you want to accelerate your knowledge gains. but personally i think you need some baseline knowledge to actually understand a lot of that content

here's a generic "flow chart" for the game:

1) first you do the "laning phase" where everyone is in their lane.
This goes on until one tower falls. (ANY tower).

2) at this point the lanes are gone, because those who won the lane are doing something else (likely next to some other lane) and those who lost the lane no longer have their tower to defend.

...So what do you do in that second phase?

IF YOUR TEAM IS STRONGER THAN THEIR TEAM
you should ping and whine until your team gathers together, and when you're united, you get an objective (a tower or Roshan).
The enemy team is weaker and they shouldn't be able to stop you. This is how you win the game.
There is nothing else to do when you're winning. If you see somebody farming in a moment like this, they're wasting time and endangering the team for later, when the advantage maybe isn't there anymore.

IF THEIR TEAM IS STRONGER THAN YOUR TEAM
You can do a number of things.
- split up and farm to catch up (don't do this if the enemy farms faster than you)
- gank and smoke gank (then your team becomes superior during the enemy's death and you can push)
- stack camps, ward
- split push so the enemy has to run up and down and can't reunite and push
...all of these actions to ultimately get an advantage, and when your team has the upper hand, you go back to the super important plan A: all together, all push, all here, ping ping ping!

I think Clock is easier than Axe. To kill people as Axe, you kind of need the enemy to be melee. If someone is ranged or caster, they'll get aboslutely rekt. Like imagine Axe laning against Viper. It would be horrible. Clock is good, though. You can just battery assault and trap them.

>half the time you are going to be playing against an enemy team with a core player forced to disinterestedly play a lame stunbot like Lion

Do you know what Core means? Core is Safe, Mid, or Off Lane. If someone is Lion, they would be a Support. I 100% agree that people should learn Support first. There's less pressure on Supports to be good at the game.

Like, 30 minutes in

No problem.

He'll probably die instantly after blinking in, and your Off Lane is a worthless piece of shit who caused you to lose.
That's the difference between the roles.

yes that was the point
core is more popular and the average matchmaking team will get four core players and one will thus be forced to idle through, what in their head is now, a fake match as Lion

What I want to transmit to you is this:
if your team is stronger and your teammates are split pushing or farming or trying to get a kill, you should be anxious, you should be sweating, you should be worried, you should be thinking "no, no, no, no!" And you should feel an almost sexual desire to push together (or rosh) as 5, you should feel like Indiana Jones in front of the closing door, because your window of opportunity doesn't last forever
Anonymous No.717138398
>>717138202
>core is more popular and the average matchmaking team will get four core players

The team could have five carries, so one person being Support is nice. Vision is super underrated. If someone randomly put wards around the map, they would still have a higher chance of winning against a team with no wards.
There's also the fact that 5 carries means 5 people fighting for farm. It's actually counterproductive.

>I 100% agree that people should learn Support first.
The way I always taught my friends was to have them play some simple carry and tell them what to buy and who to right click while I did everything else as support. Pos 4/5 is good to rank with because you can have the biggest impact early on to get the game going well if you know how to ball hard. Getting a new player to sit back and babysit someone is just going to teach them bad habits and make them bored of the game, from my experience.

Yeah, but that's when someone's good. Like if I'm Lion and I stun + finger, and the enemy hero is dead or 10%, I did all the work. If someone gets ganked and I hex the enemy so they can run, I've saved their lives. Only good players know how high impact Support is. There's no useless role in Dota.
By the way, what is everyone's favourite Dota 2 team? This is mine, but I've been watching them lose lately.

>I don't really know who's meta in which lane.
If you're feeling as lost about how to play Dota as your posts imply, then I can assure you are at an MMR where the "meta" simply does not apply. What will win you games is having somebody on your team that knows what the fuck they're doing. Your goal for now should be to become that person so that you can climb to an MMR bracket where just knowing the basics stops being enough enough to win 1v9. Then you can start caring about the meta, if you want, but desu paying attention to the meta still isn't all that important until you reach like the top 20% of MMR.

Pick 3-4 heroes that you like and can feel comfortable with. Ideally these will be heroes that are relatively simple mechanically, but the most important thing is that they're heroes you enjoy playing with. At least one of them should be a core and at least 1 of them should be a support. Pick one of these heroes in most/all of your games. (there's nothing wrong with picking other heroes on occasion, especially if you feel you need to have a better understanding of what those heroes can do, but if you spread yourself too thin then it'll take longer to build up your overall game competence.)

If you have drive to do it, you can lookup replays of high MMR players playing the same heroes you are and watch what they do. This isn't required, so if you find it boring or whatever then just don't do it. When watching high MMR players, the key things you should pay attention to are
>what items do they get
>where do they move
>when do they move (in some games, this will be even more important than where they move)
>how do they operate in team fights

As for what you do in games, listen to >>717135542 this is probably the best generic gameplan that can be followed by noobs and will work at low MMRs.

>you should feel like Indiana Jones in front of the closing door, because your window of opportunity doesn't last forever
It sounds kinda stupid but I agree. Randos in matchmaking fucking loooove letting an advantage slip through their fingers. I've lost too many games where my team just sat back and farmed "one more item bro" as we had an overwhelming "just push mid and win" advantage all to let the enemy team recover and slap our shit.

If their heavy hitters are dead don't farm, take objectives.
