It's really not a coincidence. New Horizons was an overhaul of the Animal Crossing formula. Replacing the iconic personality quiz opening sequence with a simple form you fill out pretty much symbolizes everything that that overhaul stood for. The goal of New Horizons was to make the game a Minecraft-lite, where everything is exactly what you get and all the game systems are completely transparent and in the player's hands. Removing the hidden systems in favor of complete player control expands the freedom of customization but comes at the cost of destroying the illusion of the game world being alive. It sacrifices what made the series unique.
