I'd say it's a solid 8/10. It puts the series on the right track after the disaster that was DW9 and stagnation of DW8, but it has very little content and takes some steps backwards like no free mode and a DOGSHIT officer system that renders literally your entire allied army/officers incapable of doing anything without you intervening and thus removing nearly all of the tactics/strategy from earlier titles ending up with you just pingponging back and forth in each map doing everything yourself.

I'm hoping for this to be fixed in the Empires mode.

What's weird about it she barely does anything. She's basically a stand in for her dad, her campaign ends right before any of the actual Jin stuff happens, they don't even depict any of the things she's known for, like warning about Zhong Hui rebellion.

It's an issue modern DW faced with its bloated cast, in that many of them barely have a reason to exist cause the games don't do anything with them. It's the one that Origins does address with its reduced cast and I'm hoping that continues in an Origins sequel.

FWIW - TK didn't really have a choice in the matter. The tech used for things like the skin rendering was under patent from Sony, who were only allowing it to be used with the PS4 platform at the time.

Sanniang and Suo are not inherently bad additions cause even though they are fictional, there is a lot from their source material that can be pulled from. The problem is DW doesn't do any of this and so far has rarely justified their inclusion. This is general problem that hinders most of the DW latter additions, the roster has just gotten way too big so the games can only give a cliff notes version of what makes these characters interesting.

This was a problem that Sho identified even as early as DW6 which is partly why that game reduced the roster and tried to have a more focused scope.

WO4 was pretty much saved by Ultimate and most of the glaring flaws were fixed. SW5 could've gotten that treatment had the cancelled DW10 not eaten its whole lunch (post-release support budget). Koei is broke as hell.

I've replayed the whole franchise this year. Just get origins. The combat & battle size is just so much better it's not even close. DW8XL is the best of the modern DW games (pre Origins).
SW4 Spirit of Sanada is the best modern SW game.
WO3U is the best WO game period. WO4 has updated stuff from DW8XL and SW4 (but not SoS) but way less content than WO3U. Not bad, just not as good as WO3U.
Abyss is a rougelite, and a pretty good one by both musou and rougelite standards alike.
Origins is the most mechanically rich and sound game, but has the least content due to effectively being a reboot. But holy fuck is it good. Save this for last or you sour the orevious games for yourself.

Id rather normal troops were stronger, but officers weren't so boringly spongey.

3 is ass. Ass story, ass cel shaded grafix, ass sound, no space maps, tiny ass maps, boring ass maps, lack of missions etc.

2 is the best. Most balanced. One of the best musou games ever.
1 is slower and superfluous since 2 supersedes it in every way.

Reborn is also great contentwise but the FPS drops and constant slowdowns with charge musous and charge ranged shit up the pace of combat. Also they reworked some of the movesets that I don't personally fuck with. And some new suits are just bloat, with lame movesets while others remain outdated with old movesets that get mogged by some of the new/reworked suits which fit better with the new pacing.
Also if you don't love SEED/Destiny you'll be annoyed since most added content is GSD. I personally love it so Reborn is my shit. Wish it got a Steam port.

Final Fight was originally called Street Fighter '89 but it's not part of the Street Fighter series. It's called SHIN Sangokumusou and DW3 is called Shin Sangokumusou 2 for a reason. They're different things and not part of the same series. Again, if they were then its 25th anniversary would have been celebrated in 2022 (25 years after the fighting game) and not this year (25 years after SSM1).

the biggest thing is the weapon triangle system, you can equip any two weapons to characters and swap them on the fly, and enemy officers will swap their weapons forcing you to change every so often. it de-emphasizes individual characters even though they do have preferred weapons. otherwise, the biggest changes are otherwise structure and design, shifts and evolutions and sidesteps, etc. it won't be so alien that it feels like you're in a different series, but it's definitely something that takes some adjusting.

I see no reason to play another game in this series until I can play as Sima Yan. 10 games into this Three Kingdoms adaptation and I still can't play the end of the Three Kingdoms era.

Here I am waiting for the fall of Jianye and you fuckers are celebrating a game that can't make it past Chibi. Why not end it even earlier so you can make Lu Bu the final boss?
