Because he confessed to the murders and explained exactly how they happened. However, what you said is correct, "death by TV World" is unprovable. Hence despite Adachi confessing, providing a motive and authentic time to which he did it, the police are having a really hard time making the charges stick. That's why he's still in jail a year later in Persona 4 Arena, awaiting a sentence.

And Adachi confessed because Yu beat him. Not in battle, but in the game he was playing. Adachi viewed the whole murder mystery as a joyride fun game to kill his boredom cause nothing ever happened in Inaba. He set up Namatame as the fall guy and idiot to continue his work, and when it looked like the game was about to end when Mitsuo killed Morooka and took credit for all the murders Adachi kidnapped him to keep the game going.

Yu successfully deduced the true culprit and defeated him, so Adachi gave up the ghost. His speech about society was just a deflection.

That’s kinda the point though, isn't it? The whole duality thing. His social link shows how *he* wants people to see him-a chill, slightly moody everyman cop just floating through life. But the reality hits when his Justice Arcana flips to Hunger, and suddenly the "mask" drops. People keep forgetting Persona is all about masks and identity. His creepy rants and meltdown aren’t out-of-character; they’re just what he was hiding behind that deadpan sarcasm. Dude was disillusioned, nihilistic, and absolutely cracked under pressure. The social link gave you the Adachi he wanted to be, not the one he really was.

Adachi deserves a redemption story. He claims he's too far gone, but Golden's ending and Ultimax imply otherwise.

Also remember that there is no conclusive evidence that can prove Adachi killed anyone. He still hasn't stood trial as of Persona 5.

Slight correction, it was the Jester Arcana. Nanako is Justice. Jester doesn't exist, but it's an alternate way of interpreting the Fool Arcana, indicating that while Adachi and Yu have great similarities, the Fool is a fool in name only, it is but the start of a journey, while Jester is an actual fool.

Yu represented "hope", Namatame represented "despair", and Adachi represented "nihilism". The most influential participant is the one who represents best what humanity wants. I don't think Atlus are very good at things that aren't the social sim gameplay (not that they're great at the social sim stuff either, I guess, but they have less competition there). The rpg gameplay they seem to prefer to offer is too straightforward to interest me, it's very repetitive and you don't get many opportunities to make non-obvious decisions.

It's really hard to care for Adachi being a murderer when the two people he killed are literal whos.

I think the story would have played better if it kept things straight with Namatame with Yamano and Saki killing themselves by curiosity (discover they can go inside TVs and do it anyways) being two others who interacted with the gas station attendant. With Adachi harmlessly joking around with Namatame when the later called to police station to what to do about the Midnight Channel.
The plot twist would be Yu and crew chasing around a murderer that doesn't exist.

the writing is the writing, i mean the whole calendar system grind, the disconnect between the two halves of the game and the way characters are spaced out are issues that were present from the start of the format and they've only slightly been able to alleviate them with bandaids and just making it easier. (which has the knock on effect of adding more downtime & busywork) the character writing can be good, but i mean more the social gameplay aspect on its own. the stories and characters hold up fine when presented in other mediums after all.

Actually the whole point is the killer's identity and the main story writing in the game is arbitrary bullshit, and they were fliflopping around who the killer should be numerous times throughout development. His normal, collected nature is most likely a leftover of a previous character iteration before they decided he's the killer.

a) being rejected by wimmenz
b) being bored.
Both of these things were his own fault. He chased women in the worst way possible and, more importantly, he was bored because he didn't fucking do anything at all. Yu and friends are the perfect counterargument. He goes after girls like a sane human being, building up a relationship with them. Also, he cultivates an active social life and literally does things with his friends all the time. Yu is rarely, if ever, bored. And that would even be the case if all the TV shit hadn't happened. While it's true that rural life has a different pace than city life, it's a myth that it's just boring by definition. Take some god damn responsibility for your life, Adachi, and find things to do. And if you can't stand it in Inaba, move to a fucking city. Persona 4 is essentially an argument against incels and social isolation.
