Stop right there. Just stop. I like Arx well enough, but Morrowind mogs it so fucking hard that it's not even close. Morrowind not only deserved to outsell it, but outreview it as well. It did both and deservedly so.
At its core, Arx is the same mind-numbing shit that we've already seen a thousand times before, and all the little details that bring the game to life are wasted because they're in service to this ultimately bland and rotten core.
Morrowind not only has the worldbuilding chops and attention to detail, but it also has the outside-the-box approach that makes all of it worthwhile.

no food-fire interactions. other than the smithing minigame the only effect fire has on things is it damages them (including causing breaking in breakable things like crates) and changes their material to a charred dark gray texture.

I never played Arx but I know about the spell minigame and I think the way Dark Messiah's spells will show a glowing symbol as your crosshair before casting is reminiscient of that Arx system. I wouldn't be surprised if they had you drawing symbols in an early version or if that was a planned feature.

The magic system is very simple:
each rune has a meaning, like Aam is create, Yok is fire, combine them and it forms "create fire".

- 8th gen CPUs
Crackdown 2 comes to mind. they thought they would use "The Cloud" for physics. idiots.

- physics effects only impressing customers when they're new
this is a speculation on my part but I think BOTW only worked so well because tendies hadn't gotten any physics games before. if tendies had all played HL2 and peers over a decade prior then BOTW would not have had the positive reception it got. you get to break those new plateaus of interactivity once or twice and then everybody takes them for granted. I feel the same way as you about
>The shit that everyone is blown away with in BOTW is something I believed will become a standart normilized mechanics
we all took it for granted before it even happened. that just shows that we didn't value it very highly. we didn't think it was a big deal but it turns out it is a big deal. it takes a lot of dev time to make those physics features robust enough to ship. a lot of dev time requires a strong financial motivation. if you can't convince a publisher that gamers will buy it for the physics then you get the 8th gen static world meta.

It's a very good thing when the only criticism I have for a game is that I wish there was more of it.
I WISH the game had more quests and had dialogue options.
I WISH there were more potions to make and you could mix the powders from different plants
I WISH there was more to ranged weapons
I WISH there were more locations
But what is there is already a really good game. The way you can drag items out of the inventory and into the world at any time is really neat; How interactive the world is in general is neat. And of course the atmosphere is great.

It's an absolute travesty that you can have nonexistent interactivity, combat, level design and story but because you're "open world" cattle will foam at the mouth. There is nothing interesting about holding W for hours on end and dialog trees and never will be. Dark Messiah mogs Oblivion in every single way. There is nothing interesting about 80 shitty quests when you can have 1 actual epic one.
You know how in open world games they typically start off with an epic linear quest before dumping you into the open world (Ironically proving that linear experiences are superior)? People should play Dark Messiah as if its the starter quest to Oblivion. Then, when you finish Dark Messiah, you unlock the open world section of the game which would be Oblivion. They you never play Oblivion because its fucking trash.

You still 'explore' in linear games, the level design is objectively more interesting because the level design has some intentionality behind it, with proper pacing, puzzles, secrets, item placement etc.
Morrowind and Oblivions "Terrain map with copied and pasted buildings and trees" is completely devoid of design.

Arx Libertatis fixes a lot of the jank, it's the best way to play the game. It better registers what runes you draw.
The magic system is probably my favorite part of the game, not just because the rune combo mechanic is cool, but also how the player can naturally mess it up in the heat of the moment when you're panicking and trying to cast a fireball or whatever in melee range. Somatic component failure is player controlled rather than being a dice roll or whatever.
It pleases my ttrpg autism.
