It's a solid game. I think it (and Serious Sam) got a lot of love because they were some of the last games in a FPS subgenre where you enter a room and millions of dudes ambush you. You know kinda like Doom. Early to mid 00s saw a big shift in FPS design and Painkiller was there to oppose it.
