It's because he was a minor when he did it. It's surprising he got 5 years desu. Since most minors for a first time criminal offense even if it's violent get a slap on the wrist.

They were also pulling out all stops with it as they claimed autism made him do it and that the teacher provoked him by taking away his switch. This probably pissed the judge off which is why he got a harsh penalty. His mother also begged the teacher to forgive him publicly and speak out against him getting a harsh sentence. But she straight up refused and demanded he be punished.
