why dont devs make a single vertical slice to impress the mouth breathers and then make a horizontal slice to actually test the game's structure? Probably get fewer cancelled games and laughingstock releases. Bare minimum the narrative and gameplay structure would get signed off on early so you can focus on making everything pretty with a finalized plan that doesn't need to be reset 6 times

It's not. The majority of devs overhired and bloated their own projects during the covid period. The more useless jobs getting culled is just the natural process of mass layoffs, the higher ups didn't target specifically that crowd and I'm sure there are still some of them in each studio pushing the same shit agenda.

It's fucking insane that they literally let this happen twice. Under Ken Levine, the king of retards, BioShock infinite happended. You have to imagine, they worked on a game, and then after multiple years of development, one of the higher-ups came in and said "show me the game". And they couldn't. They could show a few parts of a game, but they couldn't actually show a whole game or any playable long-term gameplay. What they did was that they had to send in a closer that patched together a game out of the content in 6 months.
I have no fucking idea why they allowed the same shit to happen again.
For example, one developer working on it stated they made enough content for three games. But Ken Levine constantly changed his plans. So, they created a whole fucking area for the game because Ken Levine wanted that. And then because Ken Levine changed a part of the setting, they couldn't use it anymore. This motherfucker threw out money by the millions. Then, of course, the whole fiasco with the 2013 fake E3 demo, where they showcased something that was entirely impossible. They worked for months on a demo that just really looked nice that was literally impossible to be played on the current-gen consoles. The entire demo was scripted. The AI was basically impossible. Everything around this was entirely impossible to do with the AI, with the scripting, with the consoles. Yet they actually showcased that at the E3. How the actual fuck that they allowed this to happen again?? THE SAME FRANCHISE, ONE GAME AFTER THAT.
Btw kens game is in development for 10 years now or smt like that
