Yeah, with Steam is different as Valve only wants to be online (it all started there), and the era of physical discs with steam codes is gone as nobody boughted them again to keep the model afloat. Different market from Sony and the others in which they make their own consoles and physical distribution was the norm for things to work because no online connection.
Why not keep it now? Money and control so when next gen consoles come or when you say a no-no word online you gotta buy everything again without companies bothering about physical costs.

The "technology" (meaning speed) isn't what determines the size, it could be used for any size cartridge whether it's 128mb or 8GB. For starters people wouldn't buy that for the same reason they buy key cards since it isn't reading from the cart and you still have the same issue of storage space all consoles are running into that made digital an anti-consumer option anyway. Installs are just barely higher than keys in that regard.
Second why would they buy the switch 1 carts when they already threatened Nintendo into providing the keys for an even cheaper alternative to appease their shareholders and give them an excuse to not support it.
