>>717171585 (OP)I think we need to upgrade our concepts of fantasy and sci fi.
With sci fi, real world tech is out-pacing our older visions of the future. We have communicators, space travel, robots, and soon genetic modification. We already live in the cyberpunk 1984 brave new world dystopia.
In fantasy, it's kind of like watching re-runs. We still have the same DnD/Tolkien inspired stuff from the 20th century detached from its meaning. What does it really mean to have elves, other than having pretty caucasoids? What does it mean to have orcs, other than having beefy enemies? The internal narrative and representation in these races has been hollowed out so that they are nothing but their symbols.
