Practice mode. You can build a deck with cards you don’t have, but can only use it against a single CPU opponent.
That way people can get a feel for how decks flow before committing.
It would also make events with loaner decks run more smoothly.

With your Pic related. Why the FUCK did they have the perfect template of anime characters, music, events, UI and voicelines in Duel Links and then abandon all of that for the dry as fuck Master Duel?

Master Duel would be loved a lot more if it was treated as a real videogame instead of one of those dry simulators (we already have many of those, with all cards free by default).
Imagine customizing your duelist with clothes and hairstyles taken from the anime like in World Championship 2011. Customizing your own room. A lobby of players to chat with your avatar and challenge each other.
And again, music, voicelines and events relative to the anime (which could force you to play with different cards by having a limited pool relative to its era).
Maybe some ideas were already implemented but it just wasn't Yugioh enough

HELL, I remember the Pokémon tcg online being like that, you could customize your trainer and choose what dialogues they would say in certain situations. It was extremely limited and looked ugly but the attempt was there. Also the UI in general was pretty colorful and felt like a Pokémon game.

I was in the mood to go back to Yu-Gi-Oh so I've been playing LotD to get it out of my system without having to worry about current meta, and because it's fun to clown on Duelist Kingdom decks with Pendulums. I know it's out of date at this point, but have there been any major rule changes since this game came out, or are Link Monsters still the last "big" update?

It wasn't so much power creep that allowed it as much as it was they were specifically avoiding adding many easy level 5 special summons until recently. Like if Dice Smasher were a rank 8 it would've seen play years earlier, but you can't really call it power creep that we went from easily summonable lvl 8s to lvl 5s.
And in all likelihood it was because of Dice Smasher that we got so few level 5 decks. Look at K9's random anti-light restriction. That only exists because of Dice Smasher.

Duel Links was made to appeal to the Anime fans. Master Duel appeals to the sweats, so they are not featured in the marketing.

Not in the normal sense, especially now that Dice Smasher is banned. The actually notably powerful card is Dice Smasher itself, not that we now have cards that can do for level 5s what we could already do for most levels.
