Totally doable without a trained Marianne but you need to be fast and probably your best bet is going straight for the boss kill rather. Head north with your army and avoid triggering the ambushes. Marianne can move north towards the fort, there's a spot where she won't get hit by anything even with 4 MOV. You can always add a dumb ass restriction to speed in order to make it nominally more challenging. For instance, you can ban the usage of tomes or staves, and you would expect that to make a quick clear "harder." That doesn't mean it makes sense to actually do this.
The reason why is exp rank is bad because it encourages degenerate grinding for its own sake, in a series that isn't about grinding. It's easy to see how clearing a map quickly may be beneficial; it's much harder to see what training Rebecca or Dew to an arbitrary level has to do with playing Fire Emblem intelligently. This isn't even an old-new distinction. FE from its inception has been ironclad on an anti-grind design philosophy. Maybe grind-neutral is more accurate. It has grinding options for the JRPGbrains, but it's never been necessary or particularly encouraged. Well in FE4 the arena costs no turns and there's nothing efficient or intelligent about repeatedly using the Warp Staff every turn. In FE6 the turn requirements are so insanely lenient it barely matters. Haven't tried FE7 yet. I think everyone agrees it could be done better.

I honestly don't know what you're getting at. Wankening, Birthright/Revelation, 3H, and Engage all have skirmishes. SoV is based off an ancient Famicom game, so I don't feel it counts.
Skirmishes are definitely more of a nu-FE thing, but they largely feel extraneous and peripheral. The notion that you get a steady, easy stream of exp in newer games is kinda wildly unfounded. Grindfagging in FE is basically a self inflicted punishment no matter what game you pick.

A lot of it just comes down to the way FE combat and maps are designed. You get the resources you need to be strong while normally playing through the maps, it's just how it works. What advantage do I get from grinding if I'm already doubling and killing everything?
Meanwhile I've already retired and grinded my party back up in an ongoing Etrian Odyssey 2 run for extra stats because it just kinda makes sense to do that, and you won't get those extra stats by playing the game "normally" even though they do make a difference.

It's not exactly novel but I think having the ability to warp specifically to close the distance to enemies that are just a bit too far to reach would be good to build around. Just trying to think of all the possibilities of what could be done around folding space.
