Totally doable without a trained Marianne but you need to be fast and probably your best bet is going straight for the boss kill rather. Head north with your army and avoid triggering the ambushes. Marianne can move north towards the fort, there's a spot where she won't get hit by anything even with 4 MOV. On Turn 2 you need to kill the wolf directly underneath the fort so she can safely get inside. There's also a beast in the top right you probably want to deal with. At that point it's time to either figure out dealing with the three wolves ambush reinforcements or your army is positioned to go for the boss kill. Remember that you can use gambits to force the monsters to attack people.

Yunaka is an actual assassin who's trying to throw it all away. Zelkov is just some dude who got revenge for his dead family and is now hollow inside.
If they were both serious then Yunaka would most likely win the fight. However if we followed their actual engage stats, then Zelkov has decent bases hamstrung by his class while Yunaka has some of the weaker bases relative to her join time.

Gaiden. Failed several runs for a variety of reasons.

Gaiden has been... far more difficult. I can clear chapter 1 and 2 pretty perfectly but after that I typically start REALLY struggling in chapter 3. Clair seems to die the moment I try to use her and she's one of the few characters that can reliable take out some of the stupidly strong magic users. So, I often just reset rather than continue to play.

This isn't even an old-new distinction. FE from its inception has been ironclad on an anti-grind design philosophy. Maybe grind-neutral is more accurate. It has grinding options for the JRPGbrains, but it's never been necessary or particularly encouraged. Skirmishes are definitely more of a nu-FE thing, but they largely feel extraneous and peripheral. The notion that you get a steady, easy stream of exp in newer games is kinda wildly unfounded. Grindfagging in FE is basically a self inflicted punishment no matter what game you pick.

A lot of it just comes down to the way FE combat and maps are designed. You get the resources you need to be strong while normally playing through the maps, it's just how it works. What advantage do I get from grinding if I'm already doubling and killing everything?
Meanwhile I've already retired and grinded my party back up in an ongoing Etrian Odyssey 2 run for extra stats because it just kinda makes sense to do that, and you won't get those extra stats by playing the game "normally" even though they do make a difference.

It's not exactly novel but I think having the ability to warp specifically to close the distance to enemies that are just a bit too far to reach would be good to build around. Just trying to think of all the possibilities of what could be done around folding space.
