It's actually the opposite. Gustave was only a placeholder/decoy for the real protagonists Verso and Maelle.

Gustave has zero sway over Maelle, it's the other way around. See his total freak out when it's just him and Lune. He finally calms down when he's reunited with Maelle. He'd go with whatever Maelle wanted to do, even if he'd mope about it at first.

The current headcanon is that Alicia subconsciously created Gustave as her perfect mentor figure, similarly how she subconsciously created Maelle as the idealized version of herself.

No. Lumiere citizens were separate beings from the base Canvas. It's also interesting how they were growing powerful enough to defy their god. Makes you wonder how far they could go to break the rules of Canvas.

Gustave is the true hero because his lumina converter is what allowed the cast to absorb chroma to level up and imprint the effect of pictos without actually equipping them. Maelle being able to share some of her power in the form of the painted power picto was only possible thanks to the Lumina converter
>but expedition 60
They relied on muscle power alone to bruteforce their way to the paintress, and ultimately they failed when they had to face an adversary they couldn't just wrestle to the ground and choke to death with their hard biceps.

But it's not the real Verso.
That verso is both a replacement for the real Verso who died, as well as an in-game replacement for a loved character who died.
It's a bit meta

Are they really defying her? It seems to me like the Paintress doesn't even know anyone is trying to kill her. The painted people are like gnats to her and the Curator. Expedition 0 is the only one that even made it to her, and that was an entirely different mission and probably before Clea painted the Nevrons. 60 made it furthest but realized the Curator is the true evil. Aline was too preoccupied schizoing out and playing chess against her husband to even realize anyone was defying her.

>Gustave has zero sway over Maelle, it's the other way around. See his total freak out when it's just him and Lune.
Gustave acted the way he did in the beginning of act 1 because he got completely demoralized seeing his squad slaughtered immediately after stepping off the boat. He's not a warrior, he's an affable and idealistic nerd with some combat training. He shifted priorities to saving Maelle because that's the one thing he felt was in his power to do. After reuniting with Maelle and powering up a bit, he starts to get hope that the mission is doable, he isn't just tagging along for Maelle's sake.

>Nope.
Then why doesn't Verso join at level 99? One hundred years of helping expeditions and his level is at best in the mid 30s. Whether you agree that Lumina converter is what allows leveling or not doesn't change the fact that it makes leveling up significantly easier by allowing people to share and stack pictos.

>Why did Gustave fuck Lune, but never Sciel?
Whose to say they didn't? I imagine the people in Lumiere are pretty laissez faire about casual sex, since the worst that can happen is the woman gets pregnant and there's one more person to aid future expeditions. There's an established and well funded orphanage that takes in all children regardless of their circumstance. The biggest whore in Lumiere who has the most children from unprotected sex probably gets a medal.

Why do you get exp from sparring matches? Why does Maele join at level 5 and Sciel at level 15? How did other expeditions manage to get to mid/late game areas at level 1? Could it be that levels are just a gameplay mechanic?

Because of the device Gustave made that lets them master and share the special powers. Before that, each of them could only be used by a single person, and people could only equip one of them. Gustave's Lumina Converter gave their expedition a massive power boost.

I got the vibe that they had fucked already when Gustave and Sophie were separated, because there's no reason to believe Gustave and Lune were anything more than a casual fling due to her own character flaw of keeping people at arms reach and his obsession with Sophie. Gustave probably fucked a lot of women to cope with his breakup, and he's an attractive, smart, and affable guy, so there would have been no shortage of women willing to share a bed with him. That flower girl at the start absolutely had sex with him. When Gustave reconected with Sophie he was no longer on the market and didn't want to have any more casual sex until he properly grieved her. Sciel was giving signals, but I like to believe she wasn't gonna press him until way later, she was just laying the groundwork.

The converter allows you to turn the Chroma into stats. The other expeditions just stuck pictos onto their bodies permanently. And those that made it further managed it because they avoided Renoir at the starting beach so they had more members.

But no one would have ever needed to die if Maelle had genuinely just fucked off and never returned to the canvas.
It was her refusal to do so that necessitated its destruction.

Gustave could have probably have convinced Maelle to have a non-insane relationship with the canvas or even leave it behind entirely.
