Unleashed has enjoyed one of the biggest critical reappraisals of the entire Sonic franchise, and deservedly so.

It was bashed on release because critics had the taste for the series' blood after 06 and were not about to acknowledge the game's strengths because 'LMAO WEREHOG.'

Now that people have got over themselves and can appreciate it for what it is, there is more affection for it. It's certainly the highest budget 3D Sonic we have ever gotten, the music rips, the graphics are lovely, and both the day AND night stages are fun. I said it. Fuck off if you can't into the combat.

But of course Colors and Gens were the ones everyone salivated over so we've been stuck with that shit for the longest time.

werehog is shit, that's why it was modded out

Werehog is great fun if you actually take the time to learn its gameplay and don't treat the stages like an annoyance to be button-mashed through.

They are as fun as you choose to make them.

This. Werehog gets too much hate because its le different! :((( but it's really not that bad. Yeah it's slow and not everyone is into fightan shit but there's a good amount of platforming in the werehog sections too. The Day Stages more than make up for anything Werehog detracts from the game. Some of the best sonic stages in the entire franchise that really hasn't been matched even in later titles. Unleashed should've set the benchmark for what 3D Sonic should be. Every title afterwards should've been "Unleashed Day Stages, but with more."

Critic scores these days are only useful for gauging how woke a game is. The more critics liked it, the more woke it probably is.

Werehog levels are dogshit ultra shallow mashfest that makes knockoffs like Dante's Inferno and Marlow Briggs look like Marvel vs Capcom 3. The enemies pose no threat and the platforming is plodding.

Daytime levels are mediocre hallways where you hold forward and sometimes step left or right; very little creativity or variety, filled with button mash homing attack chains or dumb QTEs.

I played this game when the flawless PC port game out, and was at once shocked with how bad of a 3D platformer it was. The beat em up sections were just as bad as I remember, but the daytime levels were much worse than I thought. I dropped the game when they made me do a full blown extended QTE sequence on an airplane

I accept the fact that 3D sonic stages are more or less interactive movies with cool visuals. I really don't know how else you make a non-sidescrolling platforming level where you move really fast. It kinda just has to be that way.

A 6/10 is pretty accurate, honestly.
The game has awful pacing (e.g. the regular whiplash between day and night stages, the forced medal progression gates, the inclusion of two separate hubs for every area for whatever reason, etc.), the werehog (which will make up a majority of your time playing through the game) is mediocre even for a GoW clone, and the performance is notably spotty.
Yeah, the day stages were neat for the time and the art direction/music is nice, but doing a casual playthrough of the game just ends up being a huge slog.

>360 version
Critics are right. The hotdog man's existence alone knocks 20 points off. Eggmanland not being separated into smaller stages is another -20. UnWiished is a masterpiece though.

The critics. The beat 'em up sections are horribly slow and shallow, the regular levels are simple as well but at least there's some fun to be had in optimizing them.
Never trust a sonic fan to have a realistic take on their games, their standards are abysmally low.

Sonic Team will never make anything better, but high-speed platformers have been done before. The problem is Sonic necessarily must be ultra-accessible. It is a series for children.

It says Sonic in the title so you can never go wrong with filling it under "never play"

Just slow 3D Sonic back down to his SA1/2 speed and focus the game around skillful environment interaction like in a Tony Hawk game.
Sonic doesn't need to move at 300 mph to feel fast, you just need to let the player experience a buildup of momentum followed by a maintenance of flow.

I can never tell if the praise for the Wii version is a meme or not but I genuinely did enjoy playing the Wii version, even though it didn't have as much as the 360 version did.

nta, but
>Cloudbuilt
a parkour-based platformer with a boost ability similar to (or likely inspired by) Sonic games - only downside of this one is some of the TPS elements, but the better you get at running through stages the less relevant shooting things becomes, so whatever
>Crumble
a physics-based platformer based around building/using momentum

I've also heard good things about Spark 2 and 3, which on the surface basically just look like blatant Sonic clones inspired by the Adventure games, but have never touched them myself.

Werehog wasn't great, and it didn't belong in a sonic game, but I think too many people let it completely ruin the game for them. There are bigger and better criticisms for the game, such as the pants-on-head retarded progression system, the worst decision made during development IMO. I think if you took out the fact that you NEED medals to progress, thus forcing you to play and explore Werehog stages, people would've been much more forgiving towards them.

Honestly Generations deserves the praise. It refined everything Unleashed built upon, even though the latter still does a few things better.
Colors' success was 100% because people were tired of gimmicky Sonic games though. I understand but it really was a step down in every single way, except art direction.

Colors is literally "Sonic: Gimmicks" though.

The Werehog is such a glaring issue for people because of how slow-paced it is. Even when going through them quickly, the night time stages are still notably longer than a skilled run through a daytime stage, and are filled with gimmicks that are just feel inherently slow to interact with like pushing blocks, climbing across ledges, tightrope sections, etc.
Compare this to the shooting and treasure hunting stages in SA2, which, while different from the traditional Sonic/Shadow stages, can still be beaten fairly quickly. Same goes for SA1. Big is a notorious standout, but even his stages can be finished within a minute or so each (from what I remember).

One of the main points of Colors' marketing was that the Wisps were largely optional. They were a gimmick the player wasn't forced to interact with constantly for once.

I don't know why Generations doesn't get the praise it deserves either. The only thing lackluster about it from what I can tell are the boss fights, but who gives a shit about boss fights in a sonic game?
Anonymous No.717205949
>>717205029
Yeah of course. I could've worded that better.
Wisps are gimmicks yeah but they're 15-second powerups for the most part. They're integrated into regular Boost gameplay.
Unleashed's gimmick was quite literally more than half the game, and the Storybook series were 100% designed around a gimmicky motion control. That shit got tiring man.

The critics. The Unleashed they reviewed runs like absolute dogshit and the framerate regularly dips into single digits. That alone justifies the low score.

A 10 second powerup is not slogging through entire maps of shit like most Sonic games since SA1 and that's why Colors was praised at the time.

When it comes to the werehog, I can see both sides of the argument. Because I think the combat is pretty fun. But the second that the combat is over, it just gets really unfun. Sometimes the grapple platforming is nice, but all the box and lever bullshit is just tedious. I mean, why do you need to mash a button to open a door?
