It's where you put the CD key, OP. It's what happened in the past when people bought physical games. There were also programs that generated a CD key, but you couldn't play online. If two people with the same CD key went online, the second person to log in gets an error message.

Most cd-keys worked if the game was offline. Even Diablo 2/Warcraft 2 ones (BNE) did work fine for installing

It was mainly done to stop people reselling it since they thought that A, people wouldn't keep the manual/slip with the cd-key and B, if they had online functionality to an account, it would stop people buying it second hand

DRM in terms of piracy wasn't why it was done. It was DRM in terms of protecting money loss

cd keys are sovl. a few years back i reinstalled diablo 2 from the cds, but didn't have the case for the key, so i went on ebay and looked for a listing where the seller forgot to censor the cd key.
