Stardew Valley came out and made all other farming sims obsolete.
Harvest Moon DS will always have a place in my heart though.

pretty straightforward, Marvelous hasn't made a good game in like 20 years

As far as I can tell, there's two types of farm sims: hard farm sims where the goal is to upscale production, and comfy farm sins where the goal is to raise a family

Is there any other way to go with a farm sim? Are there any where the goal is supporting and growing your community, perhaps even a rival farming community?

Because HM is no longer HM but story of seasons and the guys running the HM name make even worse slop than SoS games which so far have just been mediocre. Series has been on a decline since HM64/BtN/FoMT(which are all basically the same game) Rune factory basically took it over as the farming sim and that's not doing great either currently.

SV has the farm building thing down pretty well, but it felt lack luster in every other aspect. Its a good game and the dev constantly updating it is great, but always felt HM had a more charming/comfy feel to it, which is what i prefer as i just dont have the autism to continuously improve the farm so it gets old after about a yr.

This is what i think HM series fails to capitalize on and instead tries to add more to its farming while also not making it as deep or as fluid/intuitive as what SV accomplished on theirs.

after their remake of FoMT and AWL im pretty cautious on how they'll do GB, but its looked alright so far.
