Just think - if Ocarina of Time didn't exist, this would be the highest rated game of all time.

A stupid skateboard game does not deserve to be the gold standard for video games.

I sitll don't get why it was fun when I was a kid
Chopper Drop wasn't bad at all but like School 2 had the weird fuckery of the tape, France/Mexico/Skatestreet were just the same shit, get a high score.
New York wasn't too bad for most of it imo but had some weird fuckery like the fountain
Venice is probably the worst level in the fucking entire series
Philly wasn't too bad but had a lot of shit moments

Yet it was fun

THUG 2 was way better tho

>this would be the highest rated game of all time.
Just goes to show how shitty "game journalism" is. Granted, I don't think OoT should be the highest rated game either, but that's just my opinion.
TPS2 was a lot of fun, but I wouldn't put it on my top 20 of Gen 5 (including PC games from 96-2000).

Mario 64, OoT, and the Pro Skater games might as well be the trifecta of "this is how 3D games should be done" at the time and they're still brilliant. It's fair.

I just don't get it. It's not the fact that these games are fun. It's the fact that they're some of the most fun games ever made. How is that even possible? They're just skateboarding games. What sort of scientific formula did Neversoft discover when creating these games?

I always associated the N64 with trailer trash, dirty cartridges of wrestling games and south park shovelware scattered among mario 64's with torn labels and never returned rentals of slop like iggy's wrecking balls and mortal kombat sub zero.

>better timeless artstyle
>better actual dungeons so 5 year olds will struggle to complete
>better enemy ai that can pose some kind of challenge
>money isn't completely useless
>actual upgrade mechanics that let you build up your character's gear how you want
>better sidequests (helping the wheelchair girl is the most soulful quest in all of vidya)
>much better developed and more fun characters such as tron bonne
>more appealing character designs instead of some gay fairy people
>much better plot
>voice acting
>can skip cutscenes
>running around is immediately responsive instead of running in an arc to the direction you're pressing
>can jump at will
>dedicated button for aiming and lock on
>strafing
>can rotate camera whenever you want
>release date: 1997

Skateboarding is inherently fun and radical by nature. Skateboarding games when done well take what's already fun and radical and add the extra layer of fiction, allowing you to do fun and radical in ways not constrained by reality or criminal law.

The formula is something you all laughed at Miyamoto for when he used it to create another 10/10 banger: Star Fox Zero
That formula is ARCADE-STYLE GAMEPLAY. Period. THPS plays well because it's an arcade-style experience. The best game designers know their roots. What modern games are missing is the art of the HIGH SCORE. They forgot where they came from.

THPS has no lasting influence on modern games
Anonymous No.717216084 >>717216162
>>717211383
Exactly. Tony Hawk games are pure distilled fun, like grabbing a can of Surge and ollieing through a mall at midnight. Modern games are too busy holding your hand or wasting your time with crafting menus and 40-minute cutscenes. THPS just drops you in and says, "Go be awesome." It's like a playable Mountain Dew commercial and I mean that as the highest compliment.

I downloaded Flycast the other day and I have gotten shamefully addicted to Crazy Taxi (again). The DC-specific map is ass, the sequels are mediocre, but the original San Fran loop and gameplay? I could play that shit all fucking day. And have. The perfect cycle of "just one more run, come on, I was so close how the FUCK do people not run out of time, holy shit LOOK AT THOSE TIPS"

Modern games are intentionally made with a completely different mindset, but that would also explain why so many of them suck now.
Time to go back to arcade sensibilities with little fat and high skill ceilings.
