The problem with the 'game' was its false advertising, fake reviews, and price tag during a time when one wasn't able to get a refund on Steam. It was very clearly trying to sell itself as a horror game at a time when those were blowing up just to bait and switch.

At the very least I am sure it was held up as a prime example of the necessity for them. People had not yet acclimated to walking sims. There have always been shit games but outright walking simulators were still an oddity.
Steam didn't have refunds yet and as stated ITT gone homo was one of the drivers for getting them implemented. It wasn't very expensive but lots of people still felt scammed paying 15 dollars for 30 minutes of walking sim.

Yes. The whole thing was due to journalists hyping it up and encouraging people to go in blind. Then the 13 year old boys that read gaming websites ended up finding out they bought a gay love story.

I really think this is one of the events that cost journalists a lot of credibility.
