One problem with this game is that the challenge is mostly hidden within optional areas. Too much optional content increases the amount of variance in player experiences which results in people having inconsistent takeaways.

They should have had (instead of falling sections) bits of pure platforming that are required to get between each layer that tests what they've learned in a linear environment.
A kind of "road" to put it another way.
