ah, to be honest i have no idea how many people are playing the lower difficulties but looking at the lobby browser right now there seem to be more people playing recruit and veteran than the higher difficulties
recruit and vetaran, the first two difficulties, are pretty easy and you should be able clear without much trouble them even with bots, especially if you already have some experience from darktide
playing chaos wastes might speed up the grind a bit because you get 2 guaranteed chests of the highest quality for the difficulty that you played on successful completion of the expedition, plus 1 more chest of a quality that depends on a couple factors like collected coins and ranald but it's almost always the highest quality one too, this third chest you get whether you win or lose
in chaos wastes could be good because your gear doesn't matter, the only thing i'd say is important is the lvl5 talent that gives you temp health generation
also always open your chests as soon as you get them, there isn't much point in keeping them. maaaybe keep emperor's vaults if you want, to open when you're max level and max power for a chance for red rarity gear
definitely always open veteran and recruit chests because they're capped at 100 and 200 power respectively so there's absolutely no reason to keep them

i've never had any issue finding lobbies with a free slot for the character i wanted to play but if you're really unlucky you can always host
playing only one character would only be a problem when playing with bots because they'll be the level of the character and they use the gear that you equip on them
