I remember hunger coming out and it absolutely killed the preexisting vibe that normal minecraft had. Is it trivial to produce enough food to stay fed with cakes forever? Yeah. But it was created a constant chore you HAD to do in a normal game whereas vanilla Minecraft had always allowed for very freeform fucking around and exploring without caring about your resource management while exploring in the past.
I have played minecraft plenty over the years, and I enjoy the RPG/survival features now, but they were super half-baked and pointless while just dragging the game down back then.
