The new gimmicks are pointless for the most part. They should have focused on making better tracks.

I was just doing the Bowser Castle 3 shortcut half an hour ago on NSO. It's way more balanced when you need a mushroom or a star to do it instead of charging up a bike miniturbo to clear the gap.

That pier shortcut on Riverside Park is demonic though. It has to be one of the most difficult shortcuts in the entire series - and it's intentional!

I'm sorry, I can't hear you over Funky Kong's screaming from skipping half of Dry Dry Ruins. Face it, Worldtist, your game is too safe. Every shortcut you take was completely intended by the devs, and when your community finally does discover the game's first ultra, you can bet that Nintendo will patch it out. You may only drive and jump where Lakitu tells you while everyone else gets to have fun.

Most Wiifags are millennials that got to appreciate finally having a Mario Kart with easily accessible multiplayer. The character and item balance is fucked, but the praise is entirely justified as the rest of the game still holds up incredibly well. I really enjoyed my last playthrough last year.

Also Funky is based. Imagine having a character whose voicelines are so good that Nintendo ports after being absent for more than a decade. This character is perfect.

Ironically being a Wii zoomie was my first step to retro gaming thanks to VC and GC compatibility, even as a stupid kid the price to quality ratio seemed much more consistent than new releases.
A big reason behind MKWii specifically being so beloved, sometimes to an obnoxious degree, probably has to do with sales, but also timing and mod support. It was the first proper online MK (DS only supported 4 players and 100cc) which made it very popular, and then CTGP and custom online servers came out when 7 was new and kind of divisive, and the Wii U not selling well meant it had a ridiculously long lifespan. It wasn't until 8DX came out that most people finally started to move away from Wii.

The base roster is better than the roster of 8 at launch though, and it actually has a decent battle mode. Also tricks are a great addition to the gameplay. The tracks are fantastic too. The problems this game has are the intermission tracks and freeroam being barebones. If this game was just the tracks with 12 racers at once just like the previous games it would have been praised as the best Mario Kart game (without DLC)
