Why do so many Chinese and Korean games pretend to be Japanese? You know what I mean, giving a huge number of characters JP names, saving their biggest budget for tier 1 JP voice acting, setting it in a Japanese culture, etc.

nips have too much cultural clout not to coast off
chinks have their bigass mythology, but nobody cares about dragon bureaucracy
gooks have kpop sexdolls and soulcrushing urban grind, but the former is too blatant and the latter is too miserable
both of them actually have fairly established action (sub)genres, but i don't think anybody besides sifu capitalized on that and it was westerners that made it anyway lmao

The same reason so many gooks and chinks run "Japanese" restaurants in America and the same reason chink and gook hookers advertise themselves as "Japanese".

I don't think it's the same reason as restaurants. Chinese restaurants are ubiquitous so they have the option of being one more in the area or take a different direction to stand out.
