Yeah. Actually, in the first two games, most of the wishes are truly granted. Heck, in the original, only one is actually twisted by Calypso--the rest are all properly granted (or left ambiguous), were fucked up by the wisher either before or after, or were just excuses to get close to Calypso to fuck him up. TM2 does have more monkey paws, bad wishers, and properly granted wishes being more violent, but Calypso is still mostly on the up-and-up.

The wishes being mostly bullshit only started with Twisted Metal 3, and you could say it's actually not intended to be part of the series, since that's also when the series changed hands to new developers. That might also be why Twisted Metal Black goes back to mostly granted wishes, as that's also when some of the original developers returned, but it's not entirely like the originals due to the fact that everyone in Twisted Metal Black is a violent psycho that in most cases wants violent (albeit often rightful) revenge.

I haven't watched it, but I'm gonna judge it anyway (since this is /v/ after all) and from what I've heard it's like 90% garbage and a couple scenes of cars driving in empty parking lots, carried entirely by Samoa Joe Sweet Tooth and a couple "hey, remember this thing?" nods (some of which are admittedly so obscure that someone in the props department was an actual fan, not just a diversity hire).

That's actually the kind of wish Calypso would grant with no strings attached. He grants sufficiently frivolous or selfish wishes freely, and does everything he can to twist selfless ones or ones that threaten the future of the Twisted Metal Tournament. Unless he thinks you're just an idiot, then he'll get a laugh out of you for his own sake, like Mike and Stu.

In the given case, he'd make the driver an objectively beautiful woman, too. Throw in a wardrobe full of nice clothes, too. as a bonus. The monkey's paw would come in when actually getting everything they wanted still wasn't enough to stop the driver's self image issues, and she'd ruin herself still chasing them with plastic surgery or an eating disorder, she'd be back in the next game, playing to change herself back, having learned that the grass isn't actually greener.

I feel like part of it is that the basic Twisted Metal roster covers pretty much every segment of vehicle you'd expect- truck, cop car, hearse, semi tractor, obligatory construction machine, motorbike, military Humvee, and so on, and the stuff that's original ends up being so unique like Axel that it's unmistakeable. To not directly imitate that roster, the other games tend to have to either get 'weird' with the designs (school busses, the Weeniemobile, UFOs...) or just take a bunch of panel vans and stick shit on top of them (TM3/4, looking at you). I mean not even Twisted Metal itself is immune to it with the multiple Not-Specters in the PS3 roster and totally not cloning Rogue Trip's ambulance which is also totally not cloning the Ghostbusters Cadillac. but basically there are only so many wheeled types of death to pick from and by virtue of being first on the field, everyone else has to work around it.
