I think it's a great game, I love playing with heights and water mechanics to make good looking cities

How long does it take to build a city?

Depends what you mean by that. First there are different map sizes which vary greatly between small and big, and usually I consider a map "finished" when I exploited every area and natural water source, which can take a while.
It's pretty quick to make a sustainable colony oncve you know what you're doing, what takes time is the challenge you put on yourself ("I want to dig out that mountain to make a water reservoir")

Haven't played in years, but it was alright, had some fun making vertical city spaghetti. Had some issues with water sim being wonky at times though: there was this one pool connected to the river periodically flooding despite having no reason to, as if there were invisible waves oscillating and resonating, like there wasn't enough "natural" damping for water to ever "settle".
Hopefully it's been fixed since.

It's still the same way, but it would make sense that natural water flow would never remain 1:1 constant

That's the other way around. I got interested in beavers after watching some timberborn gameplay, even though i havent played the game (and i probably never will since colony sims arent my jam).

it needs randomly generated maps. there's like 1 map and the rest are gimmicks so you will play the same map over and over and you will basically play it out the same way every time. but random generation is hard when you have hydro dynamics and need to balance everything so we'll be lucky if we have 3 maps by the time it's done.
