The only way I'd walk into a story to buy a code-in-a-box is if I would get a steep discount for it. At least 25% off.

Too bad there wasn't a question about what kinds of games you don't mind buying digital copies of. Any games I plan on playing online I buy digital versions of and I only buy single player digital games if they've got extreme discounts, like 75%.

Strange it didn't ask anything about GKCs, but Nintendo probably considers GKCs digital.

I think digital versions are more likely to seduce me if they're considerably cheaper. I wouldnt buy anything above 30 bucks digitally on my switch, but the form didnt ask me anything about that i think.

Plus i like physical versions of games. Its kind of unconvenient but its nice to have the boxes and who knows what will happen in the future.

On the other hand, anybody knows why would someone go and bother with buying some digital code in a physical store? I was very confused about that.

The only reason you guys prefer "muh physical games" is because you still have baby brains nostalgiafagging about being a kid who pops in a cartridge on a N64 or insert a Disc into a tray like "the good old days."
It's literally meaningless if you think about it, and on PS4 and even Switch a disc or cartridge has already been nothing more than a DRM lock for a long time. A lot of Switch Cartridge data is overwritten by day 1 patch files that are read from the internal or SD storage anyway. On PS4 you install the entire game by inserting the disc, then it downloads update patches and runs the game from the console and not the disc drive anyway.

Physical has literally been dead since consoles became internet-oriented machines.

The truth? The findings of the survey are already predetermined by the company and they will skew the results to support whatever conclusion they already pre-formulated. The survey process itself is just an argumentation tactic to "make a case" for something they already want to push to concerned parties. In this case they want to convince whoever that customers aren't interested in buying physical and the data collected by this survey will support that no matter what you write or click.

Nintendo isn't going to provide more options to them either since it's Nintendo (it'll be 64GB cart or nothing otherwise). The reality is everything will be digital sooner or later and physical will default to collectors items.
Zoomers and alpha are way more used to solely digital content now then older millennials and Gen x who grew up with carts and discs.
Gaming has exploded in recent decades, so the landscape of the "community" has now changed. The vast majority of gamers now are casuals who don't consider gaming to be a hobby, whether it's the dad who dusts off his PlayStation for a weekend of God of War or the soccer mom who fired up her switch to check her ACNH island now and then.
The casuals (aka the majority of the customer base now) don't give a shit about the importance of physical media.
When you combine that with the newer generations being and that's anesthetized to anything but "click to download now" and you can see that it's going to be over sooner or later.

Just in general since covid lockdowns in 2020 I started just going digital with games as I couldn't just walk into my local shop and buy physical games at the time. When all the lockdown stuff ended I just kept with digital. But as I said I dont really even buy that many games anymore anyways. All I played last year was FF7 Rebirth and Silent Hill 2 Remake. It's mostly collectors who absolutely need a box on a shelf (Who are idiots) instead of a box with a game and people who are gifting something. Gifting a receipt or buying a gift card is insanely tacky or even insulting to some people (I even know people who find gift cards as gifts very impersonal) and leads to you having to "butter up" the packaging like buying a small box or something just so that they have something to open instead of doing something like slipping it into a birthday card. It kills the surprise for people and feels so impersonal.

The problem, I figure, isn't with Nintendo but with third parties breathing down Nintendo's necks that physical game releases were too expensive because of muh cartridge costs compared to discs and wah wah wah, but that doesn't change the fact that this solution is complete fucking garbage. But there in lies the real problem - there's no fucking solution. Physical releases on carts are just more expensive than discs or digital releases, that's not gonna change any time soon. You'd think the ideal solution would be to lower the price on digital games to encourage consumers to buy digitally considering the process of releasing a game digitally is much cheaper and you might as well trickle that lower cost down to the customer, but hurrr durrr we can't have that.

People understand what they are and actively don't want to pay for an objectively worse version of a physical copy of the game to the point that it seems like more devs are paying attention and starting to release proper physical copies instead of GKCs now.

We can only hope and pray there's a Patapon 2-esque rerelease (P2 initially was just a box with a code but after the blowback future releases a couple months later came on UMD) for some stuff like BDR because otherwise they're stuck in digital purgatory forever with the GKCs.

For the same reason companies want pre-orders. When Microsoft announced their games would cost 80 dollar this year, they had to price drop them back after low pre-order count instead of waiting for launch day and doing the walk of shame of having to lower the price immediately upon release then issue a partial refund.

As for Nintendo, they only have 2 next-gen exclusives on the Switch 2 (Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza). They're probably gauging what the post-launch hype period of Switch 2 will be like. At launch people have limited game selection and they're more likely to try out a game, but once the dust clears all that's left are 2 Nintendo exclusives and a bunch of 3rd parties with GameKey Card cancer digital garbage.

With only 1 month after release, I'm glad this survey exists. SquareEnix has a ton of Switch 2 games, but they're all keycards. Out of all the publishers, that one should be keenly aware what sales must be like. I would rather they skip "physical" if they're doing keycards like ATLUS is doing with Persona 3 Remake (doesn't even have the DLC). There's pretty much nothing any of them could do to convince me to buy a keycard unless it's 10 dollars and that's begrudgingly. Also when I took the survey Nintendo was very curious about why I didn't have a MicroSD Express card.

They cost 80 dollars for a "good one" that's like 256GB. I would rather own 512GB for the Switch 2 but not at these prices. I just found that so weird, I said no to express cards, and they wanted to know why.
