The root problem in any media analysis comes down to intent, both from the critic and the audience
YouTubers are 99% brainlets who think they can meaningfully cover every aspect of criticism in one fell swoop, often leaning into extremes or falling so hard in the middle that they say nothing at all
Games Criticism should be targeted, like focusing primarily on the gameplay or the sound or the art, because even though games are a multifaceted medium, most people are too retarded to make sweeping assessments, so they need to start small and focused to get a baseline for the rhetoric and analytical models before moving on to more impactful, total criticisms
Electric Underground and Noah Caldwell Gervais are good examples of this, being opposite sides of the spectrum that understand their limitations as critics and don’t try to make grand sweeping assessments with limited knowledge (EU is almost 100% focused on gameplay systems, NCG is 100% on narrative and aesthetic).
They’re more impactful because they stay in their lane.
Granted both of these guys would improve immensely if they bothered to learn the other side of their criticism, but them not attempting to make milquetoast commentary on stuff they clearly don’t understand (EU is a retard and NCG has the mechanical skill of a retard) makes their content far better than some joke millennial who tries to be all-encompassing like KingK or LiamTriforce (the latter two often just devolve into article reading because they have no original points due to how stretched their scope is)
