Drift mechanics in this game are so shit, I don't get why people look back on it so fondly. Nothing really interesting about being able to boost for a whole race.

Rose tinted glasses the game. Just because it was a novelty to play at school with friends without requiring a link cable doesn't change that it was objectively a downgrade after DD.
>>717265646 >less content
What? It DS has more tracks, actual single player content, and online. It objectively has more, even if you do prefer DD. >worse graphics
See "in every way that matters" >simplified physics and difficulty
You didn't play DS, simple as that.

There have been a lot of neat drift techniques. Nothing flashy but there is stuff like neutral drifting, soft drifting, and spin drifting.
To be honest it's not SOOO much more interesting but it's far more engaging to me than snaking. I mean shit, you didn't even have to worry about off road in DS once you got good at it.

Explained here. I can still play with randoms on private server playing on my real DS, and they're all profiscient in Snaking. It's like the good old days where it was always me and 2 japanese players in random races 1½ lap ahead of the other racers because of Snaking.

I don't know if I did something wrong, but I used to spam time trials and online on this and snake and PRB and my thumb hurt a fuckton, like I had to physically stop and take a couple minutes break after every race, and on 3rd laps it was sometimes difficult to make it to the end.
I never knew if it was just me doing it wrong or everyone else was also suffering.

The mission mode was pure kino and forced you to really learn the game mechanics. The snake drifting was extremely fun and felt satisfying when you could pull it off. This was the only Mario Kart game I ever bothered to completely 100%
Only con is that I destroyed my R button in the process
>>717264568 (OP) >What did Nintendo get right with Mario Kart DS
The track design and that's about it. Everyone cries about mission mode not coming back when 90% of it was "collect 10-20 coins" and "break item boxes".

Huh, neat. I played the shit out of this back in the day but I don't know if I ever found this out since you don't need it. I can understand why it never came back but it is a shame.

To this day I think a lot of the reports at the time of DS Lites having messed up R buttons was due to so many of us playing Mario Kart DS. Also fuck Nintendo for their "tri-wing" screws while I'm thinking about it.

This, Mario Kart DS went hard with every feature plus portability. Drawing a symbol on the kart, online multiplayer, game share up to 8 players wirelessly, missions with boss battles, good tracks and racers, even a new bundle that gave the physical game away cheap.
