I'll take that over modern goyslop that has so many filters, lighting effects, volumetric fog and particle effects that you can't fucking see any detail farther than 20 yards away from you.

I find a lot of old games depicting realistic-ish locals to be charming, and they (the artists/devs at the time) have a better eye and execution of art design and color theory.
Bonus points if it's a good game like Doom or Duke and the level designers make landmarks to keep you from getting lost.

These graphics are comfy and pure kino. Modern games have piss filters and bloom slapped on everything, and have no visual identity whatsoever.
I'm not saying modern attempts to make more Dooms and Dukes are good, but I am saying that era was pretty soulful. Also, those were considered good graphics back then. You know, like how you swear the utter slop you consume now is "good".

It's hilarious when any game past 2006 tried to do it, because they actually look more dated.

I don't play much of modern vidya. Last one I rember that had a good visual style was DMC5

Isn't it hilarious how modern games look like shit on purpose because they can't make them good looking because all the passionate artists and directors are replaced with dei hires, faggots, niggers, lesbians and pajeets?

I still think this way. It was also way more accessible, so everyone could try their hand at level creation. (Of course that also meant tons of shit was published, but whatever.)

The creation of the Quake engine was basically the start of the soul vs soulless debate for game engines. Quake and Quake 3 were both criticized for having a color pallette of brown, grey and sandstone red. There were gamers even as far back as the late 90's that argued that the Build and Unreal engines were better than the Quake engine because of their superior color pallets and interactivity.

Douk vs Q1 was a bit unfair because hardware genuinely couldn't handle making anything but very abstract environments in Quake. Keep in mind this is in the software rendering era and cpus were slow as fuck back then. Looking back, Quake did well with its limitations even if Douk had more interesting environments.

UT99 vs Q3 however, that was the epitome of soul vs soulless

I think it looks pretty cool when they do it. Adds a layer of surrealism you can't get from modern games that somehow makes them feel more real than games with realistic graphics. Maybe its just the game forcing my imagination to take over.

Build engine games has some grittyness that makes the games comfy: Duke 3D, Blood, Shadow Warrior, Redneck Rampage, Ion Fury. Something that Doom doesn't have and never will even with mods.
Shame that modifying and making proper maps is quite harder than Doom

Doom wads can be really pretty, Eviternity 2 looks great and has some cool environments. Then you have the gzdoom stuff like golden souls.
It's just not as good at conjuring up the illusion of real life places. Slopes and having lots of interactive clutter is probably a big part of that
