Kino dialogue and atmosphere and a fuck load of menu time.

A dogshit, blatantly unfinished game carried entirely by the ridiculously high tech presentation

A crafting system that is both convoluted and wastes your time.

A great game with some mechanics that look more complicated than they actually are.
Keep your Phantom Points at maximum.
You only need three weapons: one for slashing, one for piercing and one for blunt. The overemphasizes how much "training" a weapon to hit certain enemy types actually does. These three damage types often make a much bigger impact. Don't try to train an anti-dragon spear. Just grab a spear, switch gems around. And important: buff yourself, debuff the enemy (if needed).
Also, the forging of new weapons isn't that complicated. When you combine a sword that does 15 damage with a sword that does 16 damage, then you often get the next upgrade that causes 17 damage. This usually works (some exceptions). It only gets really random if you combine weapons of different types.
Furthermore, enemies can drop weapons and armor that they themselves have equipped. You don't need to grind anything in this game. But if you see a knight wielding an axe you think looks cool, then you can farm him.

A shit ton of micromanaging equipment in the menus. It's not the kind of game where you just equip the thing with the biggest number and call it a day. But changing equipment and moving gems is a slow process.

My first buyer's remorse. I still can't believe I spent all my pocket money on this garbage game. Been mad for 25 years straight.

Idle at the menu because iirc there are three different videos that play and one of them is an important prologue.

Accessible dungeon crawler for beginners with lots and I mean LOTS of menu navigation. If you're playing on an emulator, turn on automatic speed up when accessing the memory card, accessing the fucking item box will eat up a lot of time otherwise.

An incredibly original game with the best style, setting and music of any squaresoft game. Combat is original and fresh, but tends to get repetitive after a while. Still, my favorite game of all time.

I don't get the combat. You can initiate when you are in range to attack but coming out of an attack you can immediately reinitiate again and again if you spam X never letting them do anything.
