You talk shovelware, but that's literally what comprises much of GC's library. You were not getting the biggest franchises on PS2 - no MGS2/3, no Fatal Frame 1-3, no GTA 3/VC, SA, no Ace Combat 4/0/5, no Armored Core, no Godhand, no RE Outbreak 1/2, no Kingdom Hearts 1/2, and the list goes on. You also speak like your childhood restrained vidya purchases were something normal. Anyone who was older than 10 built strong libraries on PS2.
Meanwhile, I remember as an initial GC owners - going months, and months without any good or new announcements. You'd get some gay shit like One Piece Battle Carnival or some shit, while everyone else moved on. Or some gimmick DK Bingo bullshit.
You might bring up that chart of PS2 games with 60-70% metacritic scores - but that's laughable as well. Plenty of great games that filtered retard-tier reviewers who cry at "trial and error" or "difficult cameras". I'd much rather than than overly focus tested garbage meant for babies.
Btw, I did enjoy plenty of GC games - Sunshine, Melee, F Zeeo Killer 7, Air Ride, RE4, REmake 1, etc (which mostly describes any same person's actual GC library btw) - but in no-way do they replace the plenty of core genres that were absent on the device. GC was at best, a side console you could play a couple good games on that you'd return to once in a while.
PS2 had the actual continuations of franchises and genres started on SNES and PS1. GC had barely anything of that. You had tech demos for infants, minus RE4.
