The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Should I play the GameCube or Wii U version of Wind Waker?

Gamecube. It's the original vision. It looks way better and the Wii U improvements are just conveniences.

I'd recommend HD for a casual playthrough since it removes a big chunk of a tedious part toward the end of the game

I never played the WiiU version but I vouch for it since apparently it buffs your wallet and heavily nerfs the retarded ass triforce quest

wii u, it looks better and makes the worst part of the game more tolerable

For aesthetic? Gamecube. For vaguely tolerable gameplay and pacing? WiiU.

Gamecube with a mod that gives you faster sailing, they actually wanted that in the game but couldn't implement it because of loading times on the original hardware. Wii U fucks with the visuals. Triforce quest isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be if you go for wallet upgrades as soon as you can.

It's insane how zoomers are so allergic to actual original gameplay intent, and just support babying down of games as if there wasn't any thought or deliberation put into the actual original design.

They have no problem slogging through BotW's massively bloated and empty map, but apparently an endgame quest that offers a fun, unique experience and only takes a couple hours to complete, and can be done throughout the game as you're exploring, is too much for them. Fuck off.

OP, play the original. It's the best version in terms of artstyle, lighting, balance, artistic intent, and you will have the shared experience of the original, instead of the watered-down zoomer experience.

Gamecube is always better. It just looks better. I hate how the Wii U made the art look more "impressionistic" like BotW is. They added pockets of "dark water" for realism's sake but it looks like crap. Also, you're meant to use the titular Wind Waker to shift the wind direction to create the whole "this is how you sail with a sail" feeling. Just double tapping A to skip it is a cheat code.

Still Gamecube.

(note: he only says that in the first 20 seconds to appease the hordes of retarded zoomers that will dislike and angry comment bomb the video, he doesn't actually believe at all which is why he spends the entire video thoroughly dismantling it)

They fucked up a TON of stuff like the camera, the input lag, the horse controls, the soundtrack continuing seamlessly through transitions, the inventory system, certain hazards now deal less damage, your sword just literally phases through walls making close quarters combat way less tense, and there is a bunch of gay filler amiibo shit.

I do like video games, which is precisely why I don't like Wind Waker. I've played it on Gamecube and WiiU. Neither time was especially pleasant, but WiiU was somewhat less annoying. And it's not the sailing, that's probably the best part of the game. It's the nothing dungeons, sidequests and general island exploration. The Triforce quest is good in concept and HD almost makes it decent, but it's structurally fucked beyond repair and would need a complete redo to be anything actually good.

>muh original intent
WW leaves so many of its ideas on the cutting room floor due to rushed development that the "original vision" has yet to see the light of day. All we ever got is what the devs had time to slap together.

and those design decisions, cutbacks, and unfinished ideas represent the holistic piece of art that is "Wind Waker".

Take Majora's Mask, Nintendo never would have made such a bizarre game under normal circumstances, so it wouldn't be fair to say that Majora's Mask was good in spite of its rushed development, it was good specifically *because* of it.

No, it just means that the game was rushed. MM was conceived under an ultimatum of a fixed timeline. WW just got fucked in the ass and was released incomplete.

Who's not to say that the extra development time wouldn't have led to over editing, adding excessive bloat, or removing features/elements that fans ended up enjoying?

WW is not a top 3 Zelda. Not even fucking close. It received a lot of critical acclaim at the time, in part for its aesthetics and in part because it was a Zelda game in 2002. It got a lot of flack from fans on reveal for the art direction, its sales weren't what Nintendo hoped for (admittedly that one's more of an issue with the Gamecube itself), and critical reassessment of the game's actual content in recent years is mixed if we're being kind. The game looks and sounds great but that's about all it's got.

WW's reputations has only improved over time. Artstyle, atmosphere, charm, and the unique sailing elements carry a lot of that, it's a very unique and memorable game, even if it may not have the absolute best dungeon puzzles compared to others in the series.

You shouldn't play it

>dude what if we got rid of all the gritty elements that were essential to zelda's aesthetic
>dude what if we made the ocean huge and empty with the same repeating blue color throughout
>dude what if we got rid of all challenge from every aspect of the game
>dude what if we told you how to solve a puzzle in the final dungeon when the solution was a door over
>dude what if we got rid of a few dungeons and replaced them with stupid triforce hunt shit
>dude what if we had the worst dungeons in 3D zelda
>dude what if we tried to give ganon a sympathetic motive at the final battle, never expanded on it and killed him anyway
>dude what if we added a multi-weapon mechanic but made it useless since it drops after opening a door and are all shittier than the master sword anyway
>dude what if we permanently fucked up the timeline
>dude what if we made it so you constantly have to change the wind pattern to even navigate through the shit overworld
>dude what if we made it so that the biggest side quest in the game involves a camera with an extremely limited photo inventory
>dude what if we copy pasted shitty enemy gauntlets all over the world for padding
>dude what if we made the teleporting mechanic limited to a couple squares of the world
>dude what if we had the first major area in the game open up with a shitty stealth segment for no reason
>dude what if...hear me out...what if we made the players farm for butterfly charms to progress
Anonymous No.717274908
Wii U's quick sail is convenient and the Triforce hunt is shortened, which some will prefer.

Besides that, there is little reason to not play the original. Even in SD it looks good.
