The 90s was the best time to grow up. Corporate had SOVL back then. It was that sweet time when music artists had just fully matured to meet producerslop and balance each other's best traits. It was right before the 00s and 10s when the producerslop took over and found their repeated templates for success.

People were making 9/11 jokes days after the fact. It wasn't THAT catastrophic culture wise.
Real culprit is the 2008 crash making the corporate world afraid of risk and sanitizing everything for mass appeal.

Exactly. It was right around 2008 when I coincidentally was old enough to really form some thoughts and that's when I distinctly remember starting to feel like "Everything is kinda the same?" I even made a powerpoint against slop music in 2009.
Ever since then Gaming was my go-to because it hadn't reached "slop status"yet, but holy shit it has been a slop-market since the late 2010s. We're steadily on course to reach the Spotify "chill & vibe" era of music but for gaming.
I started listening to KoRn and Tool, and Sting, and Metallica and Beatles around 2009 or 2010. That's when I realized music used to be something more than just background noise. There used to be more art and soul in commercial music composition, and the same was true of movies and video games.
My first enemy was Disney Channel. I noticed growing up with older cartoons and shifting to that later, that it seemed to promote American Family Values in a different way than the 70s and 90s feature cartoons did. That's the first time I started "noticing".

2008 was definitely this awful cultural inflection point that people thought was just temporary because of the financial crisis, but instead it seems to have been baked into everything. I feel like music got hit by far the hardest though like holy shit.

I personally blame Europe. I can't really explain how, just that we started really hearing lame slimmed down genre music in danish radio and NOTHING else already by like 2008, and then any time I saw American hitlists it still looked normal, but after years and more years, it seemed like other countries also had the same slop-factor. And now it's anime music. It's starting to sound a lot more streamlined and reach that 2010s feel as well, even though it has long held out as the most diverse and genre-open music industry. The problem is that anime has really turned into a normie thing in the latest generation and I see local news articles about it.
That's when you know it's become "government-safe".
