It was shunned for having rather poor implementation of certain mechanics, being an SD game on the PS3, and being much goofier than the first two games. However, the Vita release fixed a lot of the gameplay changes, we have 3 games for HD sprites, and Disgaea simply did get goofier. Basically if you were to play the games in chronological order and knew nothing of D3's reputation you'd probably like it. The only thing I can say I actually dislike is the chapter where Mao's mental age regresses but even then it gives Almaz some development. Also, everyone fucking hated Mao, but I think he works as a very bizarre asshole.

It was a huge step in the right direction after the travesty that was 6 but the series hasn't kept up with the QoL needed for all the feature creep. I hit the post game and got burnt out on the grind not because of the grind itself but because of how fucking tedious it was swapping everyone's class mastery after every single stage. Once I realized I'd be doing it several hundred times I just called it quits and that issue could have been completely avoided if mastery was changed automatically and there's no reason for it not to because you gain literally nothing for staying focused on the same class.

I would agree with this but the Disgaea sprites have never been all that cartoony because the series has always relied on limited animation. You don't see much squash and stretch with the models but you didn't see much of it with the sprites either. It's far more about over-the-top attacks which rely on lasers and explosions, not absurd animation.

Valvatorez is great in his game, he's got a fun dynamic with Fenrich. One of if not the most genuinely likable protagonist in the series, low bar I know. Your mileage may vary. Bro what "effort"? Disgaea games are literally character PNGs and text, the same map textures reused over a million times, it has midi as fuck music, all the effort is put into attack animation and nothing else because the core gameplay is virtually the same across every title.
It's literally a series where the point is that you keep leveling up over and over to do bigger numbers instead of being actually creative to defeat enemies. Even Fire Emblem has more thought put into it.

Gacha games do not allow that. They allow grinding and they allow min/maxing but not in the same way that you can autistically grind a single player game. Gachas always have gating because that's how they encourage you to spend money. If you can just grind your way through all the content that's what people are going to do because that's something Disgaea fans enjoy.

The only thing good about six is the story for the first two thirds or so. There's some genuinely good and heartwarming interaction between Zed and Bieko but that doesn't salvage a game with so many flaws. 7 shows that they listened to a lot of feedback and learned from a lot of their mistakes and it's just a better game in general for it.

He was alright. They did the usual Disgaea thing of pushing a running gag on him way too hard that wasn't amusing to begin with. He was at his best when got to interact with Ao, but she was sidelined for most of the game. If he comes back as a cameo character, I can see him being more likable overall since they'd focus on him being a dad.

Gameplay-wise he's Adell with a sword. The only thing really holding him back is that outside of Hell Mode he doesn't have a strong single-target skill. His uniques overlap with the generic sword skills and D7 stops at Rising Heavens. No Super Crosslord here.
