The success of Dark Souls is entirely because of the implosion of western gaming. From Software is doing nothing special, and if anything their recent trend chasing shows they have no understanding of what made their earlier games good at all.

If Dark Souls was released ten years prior, it would be a forgotten footnote in gaming history.

It is a lesson the west didn't learned yet.
Basically since the Xbox 360 and PS3, the developers are able to track what the players are doing, and there is this number that haunts em to this day, that is the fact that only 15-20% of the players actually play games to the end.
So they have been degrading and simplifying the fuck out of the games to try to get this number to go up.
They never actually asked themselves "do the players even WANT to get to the end?", it's "players don't end games = bad".
Then enter dark souls, a game that don't do any of that but normies and casuals still love.
There's a reason why that faggot is seethe with "zanzibar forgive me".
Video game screenwriters HATE that most people are not interested in their garbage.


Meanwhile rockstar understands that perfectly, and makes games designed to be fun for normies even if they don't play the whole thing, and swim in money, and also nintendo understood it and made two zeldas around that as well.

Dark souls is popular because it is fun to play even in short bursts, because they didn't fucking neutered everything to try to force you to play the whole thing.
