This game gets more mileage playing multiplayer. Unfortunately, the dads that have been PBMing each other for 20 years will just stomp you until you learn. You either have to be autistic enough to learn or be content with fighting the AI.
It's easier to learn a nation that has strong units and is straight forward in terms of magic and recruitments. Early age options are Agartha, Abysia and Mekone. For MA Ulm is alright but I recommend Marignon since they only have 1 magic path to worry about. Try not to play nations with astral or blood because they're micro management heavy which sucks if you're clueless.

i'm pretty new too but my strategy is to think about the faction i'm playing, first, and then the god i build secondarily. definitely not the other way around. for example if you're playing a faction that has a lot of sacred units, or sacreds that are obviously extremely good like picrel, you'll probably want to stack as many fucked up blessings on them as possible which means you'll likely want a weak little bitch god instead of a cool monster (so you can have more points for your blessings).

in situations where you aren't just memeblessing, you'll want to think about your god's function. if you want an earlygame powerhouse that can expand really good and get you more territory faster, you'll want a cool monster like a dragon. if you want a LATEgame powerhouse that can rape whole armies you'll want a titan, who differ from monsters by having more equip slots. or if you're bad and constantly fuck up by getting your god killed, you can try the totally immobile ones and just not even worry about it.

once you're more familiar with the game's autistic magic system, and what spells/items you want, you'll get it.

i only play singleplayer but i've had a ton of fun just watching multiplayer matches on yt, you also learn a lot about the game without having to deal with the autism of MP, tho you'll never be able to experience this game at its fullest without playing MP, that's just were the game shines, the AI is just braindead and cheats out the ass so it gets stale really quickly.

I really like the lore of the game.
We need more games with bronze age setting/mythology.
But the actual gameplay is fucking unbearable, the more you understand it the more you hate it.

Unironically true though. Every time it goes on sale people still complain it's like 30 bucks for a game with an interface that looks like it was coded in a microwave. Meanwhile dev's sittin’ there tossing out patch notes once every two years like he's gracing us from Olympus. Love Dominions but it's held together with duct tape and spaghetti code, dev could lower the price by 10 bucks and still sleep on a pile of indie strategy game money.
