Its a good game, As long as you ignore the microtransactions.

Except due to the way Speedstorm works you can't ignore it. You need character shards to unlock new characters, if you plan on playing any mode but the single mode that runs everyone maxed out w/ no pit crews then you need MORE shards to level them up AND shards to get and power up their Pit Crew members. Needing to grind up your characters is a core aspect of the game and it is intentionally a horrible slow dripfeed to incentivize buying the microtransactions instead.
It's like saying you can technically play Clash of Clans for free, yeah you can but you'll get your ass raped daily by whales while you wait for your stuff to get built and repaired as needed

Yes you can. As long as you started the game as soon as it went free-to-play (we're about to hit the 2nd anniversary of that next month btw), you were good to go. I hoarded all the Tokens from Ranked and bought all the Gold Pass currencies, I went a whole year without having to spend real money on this. I did have to change up strategy when I ran out, but thanks to the game being released on mobile last year, I found ways to get the Passes at full-off discount. I Got almost all 100 characters for $0., You just gotta be really smart about it which is unfortunate for this place. I swear people on /v/ are pretty fucking stupid here.

Except again, that shit takes a lot of time by design. Each event nets you only a few shards, multiple PVE stages have character locks which require certain characters thus needing them at certain levels which requires a certain amount of shards. You either dedicate your time to it religiously or you buy microtransactions to keep up. This is how Gameloft operates the Asphalt series as well.

Looking forward to Alice season. Doesn't change that the micro-transactions ruin it, including making most of those princesses mid-season racers.
