The unoriginality of those assets is intentionally weaved into the narrative of the first game. And really, it's only a problem if you've played a ton of other rpgmaker games and are tired of seeing them, yet that still wasn't a problem for me because the dev knows how to use them well.

What are you talking about? Leaving some things that aren't the focus of the story as simple references isn't a sign of surface-level understanding, you can't deny that the author did his homework on Alice in Wonderland and the life of Charles Dodgson, it's visible in every detail. Lovecraft too, it's not a typical example of cosmic horror but he clearly knows more about his works and the wider universe he created than most of Howard's vidya copycats and more importantly the way he turns the dynamic between eldritch beings and humans on its head is a very fresh and interesting take on the formula.
