my 5 year old nephew is visiting for a few days
he wants to play video games but - and his mother told me as much - that he isn't old enough to understand the concepts of challenge, winning, losing, and progress in general. the most he understands is him pressing a button and a character doing something on the screen.

what games is he able to play?

>he isn't old enough to understand the concepts of challenge, winning, losing, and progress in general.

....so?
Back in 1992 or so i would have been about 4 and I don't think I figured out that you had to press start to play Sonic 1 for like two more years. THEN I was scared shitless of Dr Robotnik at the end of Green Hill Zone. but I did figure out the cheat that lets you control sonic on the demo screen all by myself.

let that little retard play whatever he wants

Maybe the mother is retarded like most women and coddles her kid instead of helping him mature.

he does like rtdldx a lot
but he can't decide between dicking around in ability rooms and playing actual levels
also he tends to walk off cliffs and get flustered when up against obstacles he can't fight

MAYbe
this game likely has too many overlapping systems (bananza forms, usage of terrain, DK's own moveset and its applications) for him to fully understand
at this point i think sonic origins (i.e. with no lives to lose) and ratchet and clank might be the best ones for him

Putting a video game in front of a 5 year old is an extremely easy way to fuck that kid up for life. Maybe don't do that and go do something outside them instead.

When I was like that my mother would boot up old side scrollers and shmups then enter an invincibility cheat. Just give him something on rails that he can't die in. When he's grasped some of the concepts give him something more involved

How about the Humungous Entertainment games?
Those should be pretty straightforward for a 5 year old. Maybe sit with him if he needs any help/advice. Those were some of my earliest experiences with gaming as a preschooler.
Or maybe some retro arcade games like Pac-Man or Space Invaders, as those have straightforward gameplay.

I usually set my 5 year old nephew with Mario Kart. It's kinda hard to completely fuck up driving a car, and depending on how retarded your nephew is, you can turn on auto steering, acceleration, or item usage.

Is he stupid?
My daughter was playing board games and such with me since she was old enough to sit through one around 3 years and she understood basic concepts like winning/losing.
