Imagine if you had turnwheel charges in Conquest 12 - the Ryoma pot map. The challenge on this map is escaping in 16 turns. You can either do this by bypassing Ryoma entirely to an escape tile, or killing him, which rewards you with a secret book.
The thing is, Ryoma is dangerous - he's dodgy and he has Vantage and a lot of crit rate. You need to come up with a good, sound plan to kill him. If a turnwheel was available in Conquest, you could just save your charges to the end, and rig your way to victory. It trivializes what is otherwise an interesting tactical decision.

This happens a lot in Engage, as a matter of fact. The issue with the turnwheel isn't that it lets you do-over a fuckup or a death. It's that it allows you to rig if you're skilled.

This entire thread I've been playing Donkey Kong Bananza and may or may not have been ragebaiting to relieve frustration which is another case of questionable design with regard to difficulty. The game offers you all kinds of upgrade options, many of which go beyond being helpful and opening up new ways of play and instead completely break the game's difficulty. Extra hearts, health refill packs, all of them would obviously trivialize difficulty to the point that I question why the devs were willing to render their hard work moot so effortlessly. I don't like it... so I chose not to use any of it and ignore them. It was that easy. And I had a good time with the game because of it.

If something happens to you in turn 20 and you want to rewind turnwheel lets you go back in granular detail over every unit action of the past 20 turns and pick which specific action you want to go back before. With save states if you suffer a disaster on turn 20 and want to go back but haven't actually set any save states for that map you'd have no choice but to reset the entire map. Turnwheel is a bit more than just normal save stating in all fairness.

On game design, I think the ideal way to do difficulty would be to design it such that the only things that change are accessibility options while elements inherent to the gameplay like level design and stats remain completely unchanged. In FE's case, the easiest setting would allow everything from no perma death to turnwheel while the hardest mode would have all of that turned off with Ironman style autosaving after every single action on the battle field. The point of easier difficulties also should not be just to give people an entrypoint to the game they're comfortable with but ultimately to try to shepherd them into trying higher difficulties and stepping out of their comfort zone.
