my theory is that the method of empowering it to ranks 3 and 4 permanently damaged the sword but it was necessary to take out ganon who would have been the strongest ganon in the series iirc. after that, the spirit of the sword visited the dreams of the dwarves and had them make the white and magical sword as a backup plan just in case they were needed in the future. not as strong and not the blade of evil's bane but with the properties necessary to kill ganon again
