Yeah Elden Ring is pretty damn hard if you're new to this genre.
My advice won't work for the second half of the base game or the DLC, but the general premise of Souls games is that combat is functionally turn based in a real time environment.
You want to attack during the openings your opponent shows. You want to fish for backstabs for easy big damage. You want to guard counter meaty hits to mitigate damage while dealing some of your own.
But also Elden Ring is the final iteration of that philosophy, and so it's going to be so much more brutal than if you played Dark Souls 1. It might not feel that way because of improved movement and jumping, but it is.
