Why did Tactical RPGs die?

Battles tend to take a long time and shareholders pushed for MUH REALISM and GWAFICKS hard, which Tactics games don't really have a lot of overlap with. You can have the prettiest art style in the world, it won't impress graphics fags unless it's 4k and you can see peach fuzz on every character's cheek.

SRPG with a clearly hand-crafted scenario would have been preferred, yes. "RNG fucking me in the ass" would have just been an optional mode, not the only thing.

You only need PSP level hardware to max out the genres potential so they got most things right that needed to right be early on.

NTA, but I was similarly anticipating Metal Slug Tactics for years, and ended up being very disappointed by it. Whatever method they use to generate the levels simply doesn't allow for enough variety. By the time you hit only about the 20 hour mark or so, you start seeing the exact same levels over and over again, which takes away the "tactical" feel of the game and it just becomes a matter of recognizing levels instead of actually using "tactics" to get you through each situation.

Anonymous No.717302841
Too grindy. There should be less statmaxxing and more emphasis on unlocking skills/items. Otherwise every battle becomes identical 1/4 into the game.

Definitely reminds me of a weird Metal Slug adaptation of Into the Breach where it's more like a puzzle game than tactics. Although it's even easier because you get a ton of pieces to solve every 'puzzle', and there's not a lot of variety within the levels themselves. At least the art is nice

They fell out of popularity because of >>717300498 and they continue to stay less popular because of >>717302486. Indie tactical RPGs have the same ailment 99% of RPG-maker games have where the creator is trying to sell you on their super unique story and super cool OCs but forgot to make the gameplay fun or different from existing titles.

I play Genshin Impact and enjoy it a lot(and recommend it) but I definitely don't want a FOMO aspect in a SRPG, I like to play them over long periods of time. I can imagine the balance being annoying too.
