It kicked off Kojimbo's Big Boss obsession and moved Solid Snake away from being the protag, effectively becoming the "first" game you play if you want to get into Metal Gear, which is retarded since it's a "prequel" that assumes you've played the other Metal Gears.
The ideas it has (healing wounds, hunting for food to eat, camouflage) sound awesome on paper, but they're all implemented poorly, shoved into a menu you have to go to every few minutes to play effectively, and basically break the flow of gameplay. The CQC system is badly implemented, with its reliance on pressure sensitive buttons, and the responsiveness feels wonky, leading to lots wrong commands (expect lots throwing guards down on the ground). It's obvious Koima was feeling the heat from western stealth games like Hitman and Splinter Cell and tried to incorporate mechanics that would allow MGS to compete instead of being the "arcade cinematic" stealth game like MGS1 and 2, but honestly, it isn't match up because there's a serious lack of refinement to everything.
The story is also kind of meh. Like it's funny that it's an anime take on James Bond, but some of the goofy shit is so over the top it's hard to care (basically any scene with Volgin) seriously about these characters. And it's funny how MGS3 fags will say it's a better story than MGS2 but it has just as many shifting alliances, triple agents, and expository dialogue as 2, but it's all couched around jokes and goofy shit, so it's magically not a problem. And while not entirely the game's fault, the localization of 3 is just ass. Lots of bum reads and translations that sounds really unnatural. But I guess after the last two games were localized by a couple of hack retards, a direct translation under Kojimbo's eye was the only option to take.
