I'm having a really hard time getting into Lumines, and partly that's because I think the music is really annoying and obnoxious outside of maybe 2 songs

If you still want to try getting into it, there's this fangame named Project Luminext that lets you use your own music and make custom themes. Lumines is a fancy music player with a neat puzzle game attached to it, anyway.

I like music, I absolutely adore his other games Rez and Child of Eden, but the music in Lumines outside Shinin and SHAKE YA BODY DOWN TO THE GROUND just annoys me

tetris is the only good block-staking-in-a-grid game and everything else are just worse versions of it that people pretend to like because they're niche or whatever

It's way less intuitive to know how a block is going to fall and combo in Lumines compared to Tetris or other games, especially when the colors change periodically. It's super satisfying when it works like in all of Mizuguchi's games but it requires its own headspace.

I was going to argue with you, but then I replayed a bit of Lumines 2 recently and most of the songs are either kind of shit and unfun to play with heavy gravity and slow clear bar, or just kind of shit but fun to play.
