SH2 and Silent Hill games in general were never particularly popular. They were held in high regard by horror fans but it wasn't a normie thing. It's mostly groomers and zoomers that started pretending it was always this timeless classic. Back in the day the main discussion was between SH2 and SH3, with people debating which one was the better one. It seems that at some point Silent Hill 2 won, so that was designated as the Citizen Kane of horror games or whatever.

Silent Hill 2 was a big launch title and sold a lot back in the day. Everyone knew what Pyramid Head was, everyone had the poster from the Zellers poster rack, that's why he's in the movie.
Certainly not everyone actually played it, or even finished it, but that's true of most popular things.

Yeah, it was a launch title and it was big. Launching within a year of the console's release makes one a launch title, as all of its marketing and general noise would occur during the time of the console's infancy- which was the case for Silent Hill 2.
And as for big, it got a fucking Greatest Hits release and the most iconic aspects of the franchise are all derived from it. It's big.
